Willkommen bei OSM, fraluma!

ich habe, als ich vor einem Jahr zu OSM stieß, auch mit Merkaartor angefangen, obwohl ich nach dem Studium diverser Wiki-Seiten eigentlich dachte, JOSM wäre das richtige für mich.
Aber irgendwie fand ich JOSM damals abschreckend und nicht intuitiv genug, mit Merkaartor (damals 0.10) dagegen bin ich gleich zurecht gekommen. Und ich konnte eine Menge über Tags, Keys und Values lernen, gerade durch die fehlenden Templates! Die Unterstützung für Relations braucht man am Anfang ohnehin nicht, die verwirren nur...
Inzwischen benutze ich seit einigen Monaten JOSM, weil ein paar Kleinigkeiten einfach schneller gehen und ich mit Relations experimentieren wollte.

Kurz und gut: Für den Einstieg kann ich Merkaartor wirklich jedem empfehlen, der ernsthaft mappen will, Will man irgendwann mehr machen und stößt an seine Grenzen, dann lohnt auch ein Blick auf JOSM.

If you like openstreetbugs, you should have a look at http://keepright.ipax.at/report_map.php This map shows consistency errors in the OSM data and is a useful utility to improve the map quality.

I can't tell you because I'm not the author of this fantastic tool. It seems that a guy from Vienna/Austria created it, but I couldn't even find his name on his website. I just wanted to tell the community about it, because I was really fascinated when I found it a few days ago...

As FK270673 already mentioned, please keep in mind to respect copyright of maps you want to use, especially printed ones. But if you use your tech equipment and a notepad and go for a walk or drive around, you can collect a lot of useful data without hurting any copyright.
And you might want to learn all about mapping by reading the Beginner's Guide

Dan, do you have "wmsplugin" in JOSM enabled? Then you will find a button with dark green background and four little white arrows on the left side of JOSM. Just put your mouse pointer over the button it the tooltip says "adjust position of WMS layer".
BTW, welcome onboard and happy mapping!

If you want a cheap solution, just get a USB GPS mouse. I use a Navilock NL-302U (with SirfStar III chipset and built in PL2303 USB-to-Serial converter) and it works like a charm under Linux.

Logging is quite easy with the command line tool 'cgpxlogger' from 'gpsd' package (http://gpsd.berlios.de/). It connects to the gpsd daemon and writes track points with configurable interval to GPX files, which is very useful for contributing data to OSM.

Als freie Alternative zu WinRAR kann ich 7-Zip (www.7-zip.org) empfehlen. Das kann außer rar auch zip, tar, 7z, bz2, cab, iso und einige andere. Außerdem ist es OpenSource und verfällt bestimmt nicht...

Wegen den Satfotos wirst du bei Yahoo nachfragen müssen, von denen die Bilder stammen, hat sicher was mit deren Lizenzpolitik, möglicherweise auch Verfügbarkeit von aktuellen Daten zu tun.

wenn du bessere Daten bzw. Kenntnisse hast, als das was bereits vorhanden ist, dann wirst du bestimmt allgemeine Zustimmung erhalten, wenn du sie mit der Welt teilst. Qualitätssteigerung ist meines Erachtens genauso wichtig wie neue Daten. Jede ernste Arbeit bei OSM ist schließlich hilfreich, also schon mal Danke im Voraus für deine Beiträge!

Zum Thema Flüsse: Da sprichst du ein nicht seltenes Problem an. Leider gestaltet es ich oft schwierig bis unmöglich, den genauen Verlauf von Gewässern mittels GPS-Empfänger aufzuzeichnen. Es sei denn man hat ein Schlauchboot oder Modellschiff mit GPS-Logger dabei... ;-)
Sodann, frohes Schaffen bei OSM!

Just try an interval of 1 or 2 seconds. For walking I use 4 seconds at the moment, but 3 would be better... And keep in mind that taking notes while driving around by car could be dangerous! ;-)

Mit Potlatch können gelöschte Wege wiederhergestellt werden. Dazu U-Taste (=undelete) drücken, Weg markieren und entriegeln. Siehe auch osm.wiki/index.php/De:Potlatch#R.C3.BCckg.C3.A4ngig-Funktion

Falls es mit mehrspurigen Fahrzeugen befahrbar ist (Feld-/Wald-Wirtschaftsweg) dann nehme ich highway=track + tracktype=grade*.
Ansonsten liegst Du laut osm.wiki/index.php/De:Map_Features#Wege mit highway=path richtig.
