Stuck with a dinosaur.

StreetPilot® c550 product link, if someone else like to have a look: https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=385 It can save up to 500 waypoints - but I could not find out if one can create them on the device or only via Garmin MapSource or Garmin POI loader. Of course you could write down the coordinates (which you may see in some “info” menu) on a paper notebook - but that is very inconvenient. In any case it would be necessary to disable any “stick to road” feature, which tries to correct bad GPS reception by projecting your current position to the nearest point on a road. All in all, as Sanderd17 said: car navigation devices are not really useful for mapping.

You could run GPS tracking programs right on your macbook (or maybe even directly record in JOSM (with some plugin?!)) - there is no need for an emulator. However, I doubt that your macbook has a GPS receiver built in and positioning via WLAN reception is of poor position accuracy (at least if the positioning is done as it is common in consumer applications).

Not much activity near here

even better, see those maps (play with the settings/layers):

Elevator?

Maybe this wiki page helps you osm.wiki/w/index.php?title=Elevator ?

Elevator?

Hi prian, what so you mean by “symbol”? Where? For which use?

Welcome to OSM, mosa_paess! :-) There is a lot to do without a gps. the bing aerial images help but the most important thing is simply a notebook and pencil (or some other technique to take notes). If you run out of ideas what to map, feel free to ask me or write a blog entry. ;-)

OSM Workshop für rostocker Katasteramt

Danke für den kleinen Bericht, interessant!

Flussgebiete Deutschlands: Mehr Zoomlevel, Permalink

Ganz toll!

impassable gate?

@Rostranimin: thanks for your comment! If the other side of the way is also gated in a similar way then you also could tag the way with an access tag. That makes it easier for “stupid” renderers/data users which only interpret access values on ways. Otherwise: like you said.

Happy mapping!

Welcome to OpenStreetMap! :-) Enjoy mapping your surroundings!

Welcome to OSM, ShankerKC! Enjoy mapping your environment! :-)

Spam, but an awesome one. I think this one ranks high in the best spam list. I’ve told the admins about it …

impassable gate?

Conditional access restrictions should be the best: access=*#Access_time_and_other_conditional_restrictions . Also leave a note or source tag explaining why you tagged those time restrictions.

How that “looks” on renderings which are just too stupid/simple should not matter - what should matter is to get the data right. The rest is the job of others. And e.g. a highway map does not need take care for that specific gate info. A cycle map could tag that gate simply impassable if it is only open a few hours a week - if the map creators decide to not show the specific opening hours or a special symbol showing that the gate is open only at specific times.

You could enforce the default to “no access” by tagging it like this:

  • access=private [I assume someone has the key to open …]
  • access:conditional=permissive @ (18:00-20:00) [assuming that there is some private ground after the gate which everybody may walk through on those two hours each day]

What do you think?

Just an idea … dashcams and street view

Somehow the idea of IOOI: http://openstreetview.org/ but with photos instead of video. In fact it seems to be simply a collection of geocoded photos on a map - other photo services have very similar map views.

Related to using video for creating map data it is worth reading: osm.wiki/Video_mapping . Also see e.g. @ubahnverleih/diary/18497 (German; automatic translation to English) about automatic feature recognition in videos.
