A few notes
  1. this search term works: “northeast 5th street, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma”. But, as Sandred17 said, of course it only works if this street is named in our map. If we don’t have the data, we cannot find the street.

  2. yes, if you zoom out too much in Potlatch2 it consumes much memory and CPU time since too much objects need to be displayed. I experience the same. That’s how it is. Some tricks to lower the load when zooming out too much: switch off the aerial image background and switch “Map style” to “Wireframe”. @Sanderd17: the limiting factor at my setup is clearly the processing power of my computer - not the download speed. However, that may be the other way round for other setups (fast computer, sloooow connection).

  3. refer to Sanderd’s explanations. The standard map does not show all features/tags. Also Potlatch does not, by far, recognize all tags. It is correct anyway. If you would like to get a confirmation that you’ve did something correctly, feel free to write me (or someone else) a message.

A few notes

Hi Jrusse! First: welcome to OSM!

I will try to answer/comment:

  1. If addresses are entered in the map (internal update processes may take some hours or days if the addresses were entered lately) you should be able to search for addresses in the search box on osm.org/ For example try to enter this: Rheinstraße 10, Wiesbaden Did you mean this feature? If you did note that the map application on this site is somehow just a demo. Much more can be done with our map data - such applications are available by third parties.

  2. you can try to zoom in more. ;-) However, a “hide” feature may be available in other editors. As far as I know JOSM has such a feature. Currently you are using Potlatch 2.

  3. I do not fully understand the first part of your comment. A listing / help for tags which can be used in the advanced mode is available in our wiki - use the search function. In case you did not find it yet, the guide may be helpful.

@Tordanik: Thanks, I saw that before - but that does not help for the modified elements.

Welcome to OSM, bigboomer! Well done edits.

If you miss some kind of tag/symbol/icon, have a look in the wiki.

Wish you much fun for your future edits here! :-)

Would a mapper who hasn’t accepted the license , if he accepts now will it bring back his changes ? I do not think so. However, maybe it is possible that an admin (bot) undos the redaction changes for this user. …just guessing…

Does somebody know if we have a “that was checked/done” board/map somewhere? Something like mark redacted ways/nodes in osmi’s redaction view as “taken care of” (remapped or still usable)? Otherwise redcted areas probably get checked more times than necessary by several users.

Icons

iPhone apps to record, share GPX tracks using OSM maps ? (Cleveland Mapping Party preview)

Hope it helps: On Symbian(!) I like ViewRanger (itunes) which is also available for iOS and according to the screenshots is not a totally different product. It is really nice and/but feature-heavy (takes some time to understand but it is worth it). E.g. you can set up the threshold for gps signal quality. You can export/import gpx files, organize POIs, … The only option I am missing is to average out some gps errors for POI creation. It offers several maps to display (over the air) - one option is OSM (direct) or OSM from some other server. And it is free (but not open source). However, again, it is not easy - the user has to be geek-ish. ;-)

I use it on my smartphone (e.g. for taking notes / POIs) in addition to a “real” Garmin gps device. I cannot see at the Apple website if it is free or has to be bought, sorry.

If you need something easy to just record tracks as a first start, one of the several sports trackers may be an option.

Hi Lindtoid, I read your story with google translator - did not understand much therefore. However, sounds interesting, much effort and: thank you for improving the map! :-) Greetings

Ver-mountainbike-isierung

How far can I walk/cycle in X minutes?

maybe you can use “Accessibility Analysis” by http://www.openrouteservice.org (“Calculates reachable regions in given time”)

Errors noticed - to be corrected

Hi, please add the error to http://openstreetbugs.schokokeks.org/ or to http://www.mapdust.com/ - otherwise it is hard to find what/where you mean. :-) Also it is the most efficient way, IMHO.

My entire neighbourhood is missing!

Welcome!

Some tips: Just be aware that especially phone gpses can be quite off the real location. Try to do several position readings and average - best would be on several days, but that is too much effort, imho.

Mobile software: I am using (besides “real” gps devices) ViewRanger (second page - can someone merge?) on Nokia/Symbian (it was/is offered for free) but it is also available for other operating systems. It is really nice and feature-heavy (takes some time to understand but it is worth it). E.g. you can set up the threshold for gps signal quality.

In Potlatch? In der normalen Karte osm.org/?
