Rural habitations in AP

While efforts to map villages started in 2007, large scale mapping picked up speed in 2019 with the availability of Bhuvan. In 2024, addition of Telugu labels with simultaneous wikidata/wikipedia id's helped improve the mapping accuracy. In 2025, additional focus on quality assurance using PMGSY data, helped improve the count of villages with wikidata, Telugu name to about 13000, which is close to the number of gram panchyats or revenue villages. Further work is needed to improve the quality assurance of hamlets inside gram panchayat, which to a large extent are already mapped. These number 26000 or two times that of villages in number.

Status

Places

Land use mapping

As per OT query, residential land use mapping is remaining only for 1500 nodes out of 35643 total nodes on 12 Nov 2025.(Telegram message link) This does not mean that entire residential use is done. It means that at least one residential land use surrounding the node is done.

Quality Assurance

Regular quality assurance is needed to maintain the quality of data. Main tasks consist of

  • Review fixme notices
  • Check Osmose issues
  • Resolve stale wikidata
  • Deduplication of Wikidata on villages
  • Adding Telugu names for villages
  • Resolving discrepancy in OSM village location when compared with wikidata location
  • Corrective action for placeholder for villages
  • Unifying more than one osm entity for same habitation

Details of the first such maintenance initiative taken up in Oct-Nov 2025 can be seen on talk page.

Noticeable errors in PMGSY data

Habitations Source downloaded on 1 Jun 2024 from https://geosadak-pmgsy.nic.in/OpenData/Index Assessment based on adding 200 PMGSY id to OSM, while verifying nearness to existing location on OSM and also check using satellite data

  • Tarlabylu (1047040) off by 1.6 Km https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/708892904
  • Devarapalli village near Parchur (824713), Bapatla district is missing in PMGSY.
  • Laxmipuram (624451) Lakshmipuram (1244389) are really one habitation assigned dual codes. OSM location is off by around 300 metres, which was corrected to the first one.
  • Santhamaguluru(952342) and Pathamaguluru(836131) names swapped.
  • Janukuntapalle(454319) is part of same Cheekalubylu (212572) habitation as of 2025 but shown differently (2019 data capture status?)

TO DO

  • Fix placeholders for villages by adding names from Karmamaps data with PMGSY ID or replacing the node with a way representing boundary of residential area surrounding it. (OT query for visualising the villages/hamlet nodes without name around 740 as of Nov 2025)
  • Add residential land use for nodes represented as village or hamlet (about 1500) as of 12 Nov 2025 (OT Query)
  • Verify accuracy of places represented as nodes by comparing with panchayat hq data provided as part of PMGSY open data set released in 2022.(around 12000)
  • Panchayat boundary mapping from LGD maps data. (Telegram discussion 12 Nov 2025) This will enable adding habitation as head quarters of panchayats and will help in further improving the maps around panchayat HQ as initial step towards improving mapping for rural areas. (around 13000)
  • Use Karmamaps release for habitation location accuracy check and also for tagging WOF unique identifier for future maintainability. (karmashapes release Who’s On First blog , dated 19 June 2023)
  • Locate more than one node representing same habitation (with probably similar sounding name or same name) and unify the same.
  • Several neighbourhoods are mapped as villages by some users, need to change. Example SR Colony, Raganapalem in Chilakaluripet OT query
