Reinterpretation of amenity=food_sharing
I noticed that you edited the text for amenity=food_sharing and added the phrase “... and food insecurity.” https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/w/index.php?title=Tag%3Aamenity%3Dfood_sharing&diff=2905806&oldid=2845513
In Switzerland and other places in Europe, the main goal of these facilities is to reduce food waste (which is a big problem here). They are clearly not set up to provide food only for people in need (food insecurity). For people in need, there are other facilities such as food banks social_facility=food_bank or soup kitchens social_facility=soup_kitchen.
I think in the US there are little free pantries or blessing boxes that are aimed at people in need and are less focused on reducing food waste. I imagine that people even buy extra food and put it in these facilities to help people in need, which contradicts the original idea of food sharing. In my opinion, facilities such as little free pantries or blessing boxes need a new tag, e.g. social_facility=community_pantry, or at least an optional formulation of the part “... and food insecurity,” e.g. “to reduce food waste and/or food insecurity.”
Even if the difference seems small, it is very important in practice (for people who visit these places). We map social_facility=soup_kitchen even if they could be documented as amenity=restaurant...
What is your opinion on this? Are you willing to make the necessary adjustments? ToastHawaii (talk) 20:07, 8 October 2025 (UTC)
- Hi! Thank you for this feedback. I fully agree with your proposed change of "reduce food waste and food insecurity" → "reduce food waste and/or food insecurity" and I have made that edit (diff). --UW Amy Bordenave (talk) 20:12, 8 October 2025 (UTC)
