The amenity=food_sharing tag is used to indicate a location - usually a publicly accessible shelf, box, cabinet, or fridge - where people drop off and pick up food to reduce food waste and/or food insecurity.
In most cases, these are surplus, leftover, or otherwise not-suitable-for-sale perishables or products that have exceeded their best-before date but are still edible. There are usually no people present to directly distribute the food or control who gives or takes the food items.
How to map
Place a node

Related facilities
Usually, an amenity=food_sharing is about sharing perishables to reduce food waste, and many have a fridge. If a location has multiple kind of items, like nonperishables such as food cans, personal hygiene products, and other items, and no fridge to cold food, consider mapping the feature with the amenity=give_box tag.

Similar tags
amenity=recycling+recycling:food=*– this tag combination has probably also been used for food sharing facilities, however, reusing and recycling (i.e. the conversion of waste materials into new materials and objects) are two different concepts. It also fails to express that you can pick up food there and that you are supposed to provide food that is edible.
