tourism=camp_site + scout=yes
In the ValueDescription template, tourism=camp_site + scout=yes is mentioned under see also. However the camp site wiki page states that "The tag tourism=camp_site is used to map a campsite (UK) or campground (North American): an area, usually divided into a number of pitches, where people can camp overnight using tents, camper vans or caravans (aka RVs or motorhomes)". Such sites are mainly used by families or small groups of friends in my country (Belgium) and certainly not by scout groups. The discussion page has a topic Should "scout camps" be tagged as camp_site? in which leisure=summer_camp is proposed for tagging places where scout camps take place. The very limited page of summer_camp does not speak about scouts but one answer in the discussion states that scouts camps should perhaps be tagged leisure=summer_camp. If this is the case, it this page should be updated with leisure=summer_camp instead of tourism=camp_site. --Lowiecode (talk) 08:26, 3 May 2021 (UTC)
scout association
Currently, the association name is sometimes given in name=* sometimes in operator=* sometimes as an abbreviation sometimes written out in full. As I find name=* and operator=* inappropriate for the association name, I would suggest using brand=*, as this is an established tag, and always writing the association name in full. --Osmwithspace (talk) 15:35, 6 July 2024 (UTC)
- I very much agree. The
name=*should be "...the primary name of the feature in the real world." I don't think any scout groups are known locally or offically by the name of the association to which they belong. At the very least they might be the name of the association together with the name of the loacl area. Re. operator: the scouting association is typically not the dailyoperator=*is not "...directly in charge of the current operation of a map object." (But they might be for some of the larger camp sites which are sometimes operated by the association itself.) So, please usebrand=*for the association name. Ideally also usebrand_short=*if the association has a well known abbreviation andbrand=wikidatato connect the association to other information in the wikisphere (and avoid problems with spelling variations). --Circinate (talk) 11:46, 1 November 2025 (UTC)

- I don't agree with using
community_center=*for scout halls. A community center is a generic description and is typically for multiple groups and uses. It was suggested to usecommunity_centre=club_homefor clubhouses, but that has been replaced by simply usingclub=*. --Circinate (talk) 20:24, 27 October 2025 (UTC)
- I changed the table. What do you think now about it?--Osmwithspace (talk) 07:06, 28 October 2025 (UTC)
- Nice work. I've added a bunch of interesting examples I found. I see that when
brand=*is used it is always for a higher level organization. That makes sense.operator=*is all over the place between the local group and some higher organization. I very much doubt that this is correct. The individual club is responsible for the running of that club, even in cases where a larger organization owns the building. I see no examples where the owner is specified.

I made some changes to your table, I hope that's okay. The shared venue as a community center doesn't always work when I look at the examples. I've found several groups who use a local school as their venue. I don't think community_centre:for=* is meant to be used like this. So I'm not sure we can generalize how to treat the venue if it is shared. Anyway, if it's a community center then it should be mapped as an area and each club should have their own node placed on the area.
I feel that all we really need as a minimum for the club as a node or area is:
Everything else is great in some examples, but I think the above should be a minimum. I understand that countries have preferences on whether the information should be added directly to an area or left as a node.

Scout Group Grounds as Area
I think Scout Group Grounds should be tagged with club=scout instead of separat nodes. I don't see any advantage in adding club=scout as a node in addition to the area. Furthermore, I'm not convinced by landuse=recreation_ground. --Osmwithspace (talk) 09:25, 6 December 2025 (UTC)
- Regarding: Club as area (land/building) vs node. I see two reasons to keep these seperate. One is the principle of One_feature,_one_OSM_element (which I linked to in the text you removed). A club and it's grounds are not a single conceptual or physical thing. Also the ground is often not owned by the scout group, so using the operator tag seems more appropriate than the club tag. There are also all sorts of tags that are not appropriate for a piece of land. What is a phone number for a piece of land - it's the number of the club - so belongs on a club node. --Circinate (talk) 11:32, 8 December 2025 (UTC)
- I disagree with both.
landuse=*+club=*area is best. The problem isclub=*being used as a facility, but is actually a organization. Standaloneclub=*point feature is still not ideal in this regard. This preventsclub=*from being used on other club-related features. It was discussed in Germany, and iD recently. https://github.com/openstreetmap/id-tagging-schema/issues/1762
—— Kovposch (talk) 15:28, 8 December 2025 (UTC)- This thread on the german forum is very relevant and goes through the history of One_feature,_one_OSM_element even linking to this 2015 version which stated as an bad situation "An area object representing a single-use building with a point object inside it. Move the tags to the area object and delete the point". That text was changed in July 2019 to "An area object with a point object inside, both with the same tags representing the same real-world feature." which is a stong indication that the community moved away from merging POI nodes into building ways. --Circinate (talk) 11:36, 9 December 2025 (UTC)
- But
building=*is not being discussed here. It's the club's facility. You have to define what's a feature first. As linked in linked, club=*doesn't exactly describe what's done there. It can be aleisure=sports_centre, studio, office=*, or meeting venue. Is addingclub=*to those a violation? It's unclear what feature it is, or is it actually an attribute for related to clubs.

- Regarding:
landuse=recreation_groundthe only advantage for this is to show when it is not agricultural land (which it often looks like from arial photography) and that it is not a campground (which the grounds around some scout groups are). My text was "Thelanduse=recreation_groundwould often be appropriate." Which I think is correct because a recreation ground is "An open green space for general recreation". I would also say User:Osmwithspace that 'not being convinced' is not a very good reason to remove the text someone has spent some effort on. 'Not being convinced' is a reason to start a discussion --Circinate (talk) 08:04, 9 December 2025 (UTC)
