A Scout Group is the local organisation for Scouting in most countries where it is active. For more about scouting see the Wikipedia article on Scouting.

Scout groups, like most clubs, can meet in several different ways. They can meet in their own building, in a local school or church, at a community center or simply outside. If you are unsure about the convention in your country map the club as a node and place it at the place where they meet.

Den, hut, hall and ship are all names some scout groups use for the building where they meet. It's not unusual that the name of the group is rather useless in a search. For example name=4th Carlton doesn't mention that they are scout or where they are. A useful addition might be description=Scout group in Central Notts.

Typical objects to map:

  • A single building as the home of a scout group can be mapped as in the table below.
  • A shared venue where a scout group is one of the groups using the venue could be tagged as amenity=community_centre. A separate node can then be made for each user of the facility.
  • Some scout groups have a generous space around their main building.
  • Some scout groups and associations run campsites, often with dormitories, kitchens etc. Some are more like a conference venue, often owned by a scouting organization and with a focus on scouting activities. If possible, tag the whole site using tourism=camp_site and the associated tags. Also use scout=yes and/or group_only=*. Find examples with this overpass-turbo query. Although such sites are not a perfect match for what many people consider a campsite, this is the best option at the moment to be inclusive of many variations (October, 2025).[1]

Recommended use

Following the principle of One feature, one OSM element mapping of scout groups can typically be divided into the OSM elements below.

Scout Group as Node

Caption text
Area / node tags Notes

Most important tags:

Additional tags:

  • brand=* the scout association of which this group is a member
  • brand:short=* the scout associations short name, if in common use
  • brand:wikidata=* wikidata item identifier of the parent scout association
  • name=* common name of the group
  • addr:*=* for the postal address
  • operator=* the entity who is directly in charge of the operation
  • scout=* air/sea/land scouts
  • scout=* "yes" can be useful for marking various objects as part of the scouting movement

Scout Group Grounds as Area

Caption text
Area / node tags Notes

Most important tags:

  • operator=* name of the scout group, preferably the official name
  • scout=* "yes" can be useful for marking various objects as part of the scouting movement
  • landuse=recreation_ground describes how the land area is used (not if it is meadow or forest)

Possible mistakes

If you know places with this tag, verify if it could be tagged with another tag.
Automated edits are strongly discouraged unless you really know what you are doing!
