Missing Cities in the List
Padova
Bicycles are vehicles
Be careful, in most countries bicycles are considered as vehicles, so use motor_vehicle=* as bicycles are admitted in nearly all LTZs
Permissions
The text at present says:
"Use vehicle=permit unless an access permit is not routinely granted to almost everyone requesting it; in this case, use vehicle=private."
I think it should be the other way round:
"Use motor_vehicle=permit with caution, as this would mean that permits are given to almost everyone requesting it. In most cases this is not the case and hence use motor_vehicle=private."
In many LTZ in Italy electric vehicles are allowed
In some LTZ in Italy motorcycles are generally allowed
Pedestrian areas and LTZ
Pedestrian Areas and LTZ are orthogonal. E.g. you may be by car in a LTZ when it is open to general traffic, but you may encounter inside the LTZ a Pedestrian Area has different and independent opening times (This a frequent problem in Padova)
Different levels of restrictions in different parts of LTZ
Padova has two subzones: one that has some time windows without restrictions, and another one that is valid 24h.
Use of "vehicle=permit" in contradiction with wiki page "access=permit"
The use of vehicle=permit to describe the access regulation of the typical ZTL is at least not clear.
The ZTL access permits are limited to a very restricted number of categories, and are certainly not the type of permit in the access=permit wiki page, which states:
" This tag should be used in cases where a permit is required, but is routinely granted to everyone requesting it. In cases where access to permit is obstructed it would be more appropriate to tag these areas access=private or access=no. So access=permit does not apply where permit is rarely granted, or only granted in exceptional circumstances, or if obtaining it is complex or there is a long waitlist. "
I would strongly suggest to change the tagging to "vehicle=private"
- The page already explains the distinction of permit and private: “Use vehicle=permit unless an access permit is not routinely granted to almost everyone requesting it; in this case, use vehicle=private.”
- Correct, but the table contents do not mention this. It's the tables that people first look at.
- You are correct, it should better be changed to 'private', can you do it? —Dieterdreist (talk) 10:11, 20 August 2025 (UTC)
- I've updated the examples and the explanation, changing 'permit' to 'private' according to the discussion. There might still be some minor details to improve in the examples. Feel free to review and adjust.—Wildmaps
- That seems to be a reasonable interpretation, but how we will then be able to differentiate a "regular" road inside a ZTL vs e.g. a road additionally signposted with
+ "eccetto autorizzati" (e.g. so that we don't route there everyone permitted to enter the ZTL)? Do we need vehicle=even_more_private? ;) Dzamper (talk) 10:41, 14 September 2025 (UTC)
Should we also tag roads inside the boundary too? Unclear
Should we tag with vehicle=permit bicycle=dismount etc... ALL roads inside the LTZ bouundary? I mean, is it enough to create the boundary and then OSM clients will do their hit-test/fit-inside detection? Or is it needed to tag all the roads in Municipal mandates/local law implementing the LTZ (or those inside the boundary of course)?
- I think on the long run tags shouldn't be duplicated on the ways, as it contradicts the One feature, one OSM element rule. Routers can understand this kind of tagging, e.g. Osmand can avoid LEZs. But until there is any support for this tagging it can lead to very bad experience to map users, so I think the tagging should be duplicated at least on the roads leading to the zone. --Infeeeee (talk) 14:04, 14 September 2025 (UTC)
