Talk:Import of UK postcodes and UPRNs (England & Wales)

I think it would help this proposal to add two sections - a 'value' statement and a 'definitions' section. E.g. What is a 'postcode' in the UK sense (something like a code given to a collection of postal delivery points), and what is a UPRN and INSPIRE ID (unique IDs given to properties?). That would be an opportunity to explain why it's OK to apply the new data to buildings that sit within a property line (rather than to the property line itself. As for the value - why would it be good to have these data? I understand the 'why' for postcodes - they are very commonly used as shorthand for a location, but not for UPRNs/INSPIRE IDs - what would they bring to the party? --Spiregrain (talk) 07:56, 29 July 2024 (UTC)

Given that, if these proposal is adopted, and OSM ends up with a pretty complete database of addresses, UPRNs and Postcodes, OSM could serve as a free, open alternative to the PAF. At that point should we expect the PAF owners to come after us (since they charge for access to the PAF). Therefore I propose that all addr:postcodes added by this method are accompanied by a source:addr:postcode tag, possibly "Inferred from 'ONS UPRN Directory' with 'OS Open UPRN'" so that it is easy to remove these data in future if the PAF owners are able to demand removal, without accidentally removing postcodes that have come from other sources like 'Code-Point_Open'. I think it's a good idea to have a soruce tag in any event. --Spiregrain (talk) 16:36, 22 October 2025 (UTC)
