Emergency traffic signals, are a type of traffic signal that are only activated during an emergency. They are often found outside fire and rescue stations. They are also commonly found prior to entering a tunnel. When not needed, these signals usually display yellow or may even turn off.

traffic_signals:direction forward/backward node Indicates the traffic signals signal only the traffic moving in the same direction as the OSM (highway) way upon which the they are placed: forward; or in the reverse direction: backward.
