Parking partly sheltered inside a shed or a lightweight structure. The construction is often simple and of variable quality. Such parking spaces are typically not fully enclosed, or they lack solid and secure closures. These structures may be made of wood, metal, or lightweight masonry.

If the sheltering structure has no walls or only a single wall, consider using parking=carports instead.

If the shelter is fully enclosed and has a lockable access door, consider using parking=garage_boxes instead.

Examples

How to map

Draw an area outlining the extent of the parking area and tag it with parking=sheds.

It is also possible to use a simple node tagged with amenity=parking+parking=sheds or with amenity=parking_entrance+parking=sheds.

Parking or building

Mappers may wonder whether to tag this type of sheltered parking as a building=shed or as amenity=parking+parking=sheds.

These two approaches represent different concepts:

  • The first (building=*) describes a physical structure without necessarily implying its usage. Areas mapped this way will not be recognised as parking by parking-related applications. It allows all attributes related to permanent buildings (construction_date=*, height=*, building:architecture=*, etc.).
  • The second (parking=*) explicitly describes the land use as parking without describing the physical structure itself. It allows all attributes relevant to parking (fee=*, capacity=*, etc.).

Both approaches may coexist: two overlapping area (depending on whether the shed structure covers the whole building footprint or only part of it), or a area for the building combined with a node for the parking.

In practice, since most parking=sheds are not publicly accessible, recognising them as parking or attaching attributes such as fee or capacity is often of limited relevance. For this reason, such areas are more commonly mapped as building=shed rather than amenity=parking+parking=sheds.

Partially sheltered parking areas

An alternative approach for mixed parking areas is to map the entire parking area with standard parking attributes (amenity=parking + parking=surface or parking=street_side) and then add individual building=shed objects at the locations of the sheltered spaces.
