The tag indoor=area is used to map indoor areas which have no walls along one or more edges. This is in contrast to indoor=room, which is assumed to have walls along all of its edges even if no walls are explicitly mapped.

Along with tags such as indoor=room and indoor=wall, this tag is intended to represent the physical layout of an indoor space. It does not (necessarily) align with functional "areas" of a building or facility – refer to relevant tags under keys such as amenity, shop or office for those.
