This tag describes water sources similar to emergency=fire_hydrant that are not meant for fire protection. Similarly though, they provide large amounts of water, they usually require a special tool to be opened, and their use has to be granted by the local authorities. These water sources are not meant for drinking, and can be used for e.g. gardening or cleaning. For publicly accessible drinking water, see amenity=water_point or amenity=drinking_water instead.

In case of extreme need, these water sources might be used by firefighters when no actual fire hydrants can be found nearby.

In France they are commonly known as "borne de puisage", and are mostly green or grey. In Spain they can be found as "boca de riego", and their look usually depend on the city but generally they are red or blue and smaller than fire hydrants.
