Proposal talk:Vehicle dismount
designated instead of recommend
I'd suggest using the same access values for dismounted access as for mounted access. To achieve this, you just need to replace bicycle:dismount=recommend with bicycle:dismount=designated (same for other modes). --JeroenvanderGun (talk) 15:58, 17 August 2025 (UTC)

Definition of *:dismount=designated
You have defined *:dismount=designated as "There is an explicit sign which tell users that dismounting a certain vehicle is recommend regardless whether riding it on the way is allowed or not." I can't remember seeing such a sign. The signs normally prescribe dismounting (also your first example, see description on this page) and don't just recommend it. I would therefore define it differently. If there really are signs that only recommend dismounting, you should perhaps provide separate values for ‘required’ and ‘recommended’. --Hufkratzer (talk) 23:12, 18 August 2025 (UTC)
- You can solve this with existing other access values. For 'required' you can use
bicycle:dismount=designated+bicycle=no, for 'recommended' you can usebicycle:dismount=designated+bicycle=discouraged. --JeroenvanderGun (talk) 08:35, 20 August 2025 (UTC)
- Yes, but the meaning is more difficult to grasp when you always have to consider two tags in combination than when you only have to consider one tag at a time. Do not overestimate how much time a mapper is willing to invest in understanding the meaning of a tag; I think many do not read the wiki and just guess. I think it is easy to guess the meaning of
bicycle=dismountcorrectly, even without reading the wiki page. But I would not say the same forbicycle:dismount=designated. The meaning ofbicycle=designatedhas been the subject of numerous lengthy discussions (example thread), so it is obviously difficult to understand, the predominant interpretation seems to vary between different regions and countries, and routers seem therefore to not distinguishbicycle=designatedfrombicycle=yes. It needs to be carefully examined and explained in detail whether we would see similar problems withbicycle:dismount=designated; this is far beyond my capabilities :) For the time being I would still preferbicycle:dismount=requiredand, if needed, bicycle:dismount=recommendedto make the meaning more obvious. --Hufkratzer (talk) 22:42, 20 August 2025 (UTC)- I've decided to go back to it added
recommendin part because I replaced it into a prefix to be more consistent with conditionals.designatedstill exists even if I'm not the fan due to the issues withdesignatedin general and may get replaced bydismount:<transport>:signed=yes. --ManuelB701 (talk) 07:13, 23 September 2025 (UTC)

pushing bicycle is ok; but on foot without bicycle isn't
Regarding "If anyone knows a case where walking on a way is only allowed if you pushing a bicycle, please let me know." - well that allegedly seems to be the case for some ferries - see the the discussion at https://community.openstreetmap.org/t/how-to-tag-fees-for-bicycles-on-ferries/138674/30 and surrounding posts. --mnalis (talk) 18:36, 8 December 2025 (UTC)
