Description

Fares on the Belgian railways use a distance-based system. In the 21 largest cities, a zone system applies for season tickets: several stations are bundled into a single zone, and are considered to be a single point when it comes to fare calculation. Unlimited trips are allowed within a zone.

This tag is set on stations that are located within such a zone. The value is the name of the reference city in the local language (e.g. Aalst, Antwerpen, Bruxelles - Brussel, Liège…).

Until October 2025, zones were also used for normal tickets and the name of the zone was printed on them. Despite the fare calulation for normal tickets still uses one single point per zone, tickets are sold from one station to the other nowadays, exactly as printed on the ticket.

Zones are listed on NMBS/SNCB official website.
