The Kattampally Mapathon aims to enhance the quality and depth of map data for Kattampally and its surrounding areas by documenting vital features such as roads, water bodies, public facilities, farmland, and local landmarks. This initiative supports ongoing conservation efforts by carefully mapping the Kattampally wetlands, which are renowned for their ecological and agricultural importance. The program also seeks to encourage community participation in the open-data ecosystem by introducing local residents, students, and volunteers to OpenStreetMap (OSM) tools and mapping practices. By doing so, it enables data-driven planning and informed decision-making that contribute to sustainable development, disaster response, and biodiversity monitoring.

The activities of the Mapathon include on-ground surveys, where volunteers use mobile applications like OSMAnd or StreetComplete to collect GPS points, photographs, and location data. These field observations are complemented by map editing sessions', where participants utilize OSM web editors such as iD Editor or JOSM to update or correct map details based on collected data and satellite imagery. The event also features workshops and training sessions to teach the basics of OSM, mapping ethics, and the use of open data for environmental and civic applications. Furthermore, the initiative fosters collaboration' with local bodies, schools, and organizations, including the OpenStreetMap Kerala Community and the Sahya Digital Conservation Foundation, to strengthen the collective impact of the mapping effort.

The Kattampally region holds significant ecological value as a unique wetland ecosystem characterized by interconnected paddy fields, canals, and mangroves. It serves as a natural flood buffer, supports rich birdlife, and sustains traditional paddy cultivation that is integral to the local community’s livelihood. Mapping this area not only brings visibility to its environmental richness but also aids in biodiversity tracking, agricultural planning, and climate resilience studies, making it a vital step toward sustainable conservation and informed regional development.
