Description in CS and SK

@HaPe-CZ and Oivo357: Hey guys, what are you doing? Please stop it. Discuss what you think differently, please! --Chris2map (talk) 18:14, 21 May 2025 (UTC)

Hi, the problem is that Oivo357 uses only mechanical (machine) translation without logical, factual and verbal turns of phrase. This results in nonsense, incorrect translations. For many English expressions, both Czech and Slovak have specific expressions or phrases that need to be used in translations. I have noticed that this is how Oivo357 has corrupted dozens, hundreds or even more Items, not only in Czech and Slovak but also in other languages. These translations of Items into national languages were probably done by native speakers and he incorrectly substitutes them at his discretion. --HaPe-CZ (talk) 18:37, 21 May 2025 (UTC)
Thanks for responding! --Chris2map (talk) 18:47, 21 May 2025 (UTC)

@Oivo357: Hi, personally I have absolutely no knowledge in neither Czech nor Slovak. Do you have some knowledge in the languages that you add to the descriptions? I've also learned from experience that one has to be careful with automatic translations, especially with short descriptions like those found here. One can't assume that these are precise enough. --Chris2map (talk) 18:47, 21 May 2025 (UTC)

Example of removing labels: Item:Q4890, overly voluminous descriptions in Cz and Sk. In addition, the phrasing (sentence formation) is misleading and wrong. And many other deleted descriptions in the national environment for other items (Qxxx) --HaPe-CZ (talk) 05:10, 22 May 2025 (UTC)
Please be precise and considerate in your review of those edits. We should assume that the changes were made in good faith, to contribute. – No descriptions were removed, but rather added or changed. Labels were removed. Based on current usage, this is generally correct, as only English-language labels are used (see Data_items#Keys). – However, caution should also be exercised when removing labels in other languages. I generally leave it up to the users in the respective national community or who are native speakers of the respective language to decide whether or not they want to remove labels. – However, if the translations in the descriptions are poor or incorrect, then User:Oivo357 should take note of this and correct them and/or ask for help. --Chris2map (talk) 08:01, 22 May 2025 (UTC)
Oivo357 He hasn't offered an explanation or otherwise responded, so I don't know if you read it. I guess I didn't. --HaPe-CZ (talk) 08:36, 22 May 2025 (UTC)
Who do you mean with "you" and "I". Do you mean "he"? You have to give it some time. Not everyone on this wiki is so quick as you are or has enough spare time. --Chris2map (talk) 09:50, 22 May 2025 (UTC)
As a native Czech speaker, I can tell I don’t find anything terrible in the Czech translations. OK, in Item:Q4890, a correct Czech description (which was exact translation of the English description) was replaced with a more wordy (and different than the English) but still acceptable description. I wouldn’t encourage such changes, but I wouldn’t call that “corruption” either. From a random sampling of the user’s edits, I found nothing which I would call “nonsense, incorrect”; I wouldn’t even be sure about them being machine translations. Maybe they are not perfect, but when being added as new translations (instead of replacing existing translation), they are IMHO passable (and, trust me, I know there can be volunteer translations worse than nothing!). --Mormegil (talk) 09:12, 9 June 2025 (UTC)
@Mormegil: Thanks for the response and comment. May I invite you to help with this dispute? See Wiki:Requests for administrator attention#Edit war User:Oivo357 and User:HaPe-CZ. --Chris2map (talk) 10:01, 9 June 2025 (UTC)
