This changeset improperly deleted a building tag.

Hi asphalteric,

Please take a look at barrier=* to see how to map barriers such as walls. For drawing barriers, you normally draw a way along a wall, whereas this change makes it look like the street *became* a wall.

It looks like you were trying to show that this road is closed, but it was already marked as such in March 2021 (see changeset/101221708).

Hi asphalteric,

Welcome to OpenStreetMap!

Changing a street to a "barrier=wall" isn't the right way to mark a street as closed.
Instead, you could use either an access tag like "access=no" (access=*) or "highway=construction" (highway=construction) if the road is undergoing construction.

You can check out the OSM Wiki (osm.wiki/) to learn the mapping conventions used in OSM.

Hi Kristjan,

Out of curiosity, is there a reason to prefer that format for the phone key? The wiki suggests that hyphens and spaces are not significant:
phone=*

In terms of the website, I often use "disused:website" to mark a website as broken and to prevent it from being re-added. Unfortunately, a lot of restaurants still have signs for their restaurants even long after their domains have expired. It's also possible that a website could be fixed later on. When surveying on the ground, I usually add signed websites, but I don't always check the history of a node to see if it was previously removed.

What do you think?

Hi Citizen Five,

Welcome to OSM!

Unfortunately, this changeset dragged some nodes out of place for the Japantown Peace Plaza and a bus stop, which can be seen here:

https://osmlab.github.io/changeset-map/#130356973

I've fixed the dragged nodes by reverting the changeset in changeset/131530568 .

Also, the "description" tag should be short and describe the on-the-ground features, not subjective evaluations of historical features:

description=*

If you're interested, though, historical features can be mapped in https://www.openhistoricalmap.org/ .

Hi Mateusz,

Thanks for letting me know!

I've removed the image tags I added in
changeset/129008761
and
changeset/129008788

I'm actually relieved to find out that StreetComplete images aren't permanent. I felt guilty adding pictures to notes since they might be wasting disk space.

I'll be sure to save future images and either host them myself or through Wikimedia Commons or Mapillary.

Thanks again!

Hi Erin,

No problem.

I kept the pitches but reverted the buildings to their previous shapes in
changeset/128539666

But the previous shapes were also slightly wrong, so I refined the shapes and added details in
changeset/128540104

Thanks again.

Hi publicerination,

Why did you delete the building tag for
way/256045019/history ?

The pitches you've drawn aren't at ground level, but are located on the roof of the building, which can be seen in
https://www.mapillary.com/app/?pKey=821645018742073

The building that used to be San Francisco Cooking School
(way/256045022/history)
was correct before, but now contains adjacent buildings seen in
https://www.mapillary.com/app/?pKey=427952082062611

Let me know if you'd like to fix this.
Otherwise, I can go ahead and revert the building shapes but keep the pitches you've added.

Thanks!

Hi pancakedrawer001,

Even though this isn't called York Street, there is in fact a driveway here. Rather than delete the way, which might be re-added later by another mapper, it would make more sense to keep the driveway but fix the tags.

I've undeleted the way in changeset/127024816, but tagged it as a driveway and added a note that it's not York Street.
Let me know if there are any issues with this change.

Thanks!

Hi perloff,

Welcome to OpenStreetMap!
Thanks for adding more details to the Berkeley campus!
In particular, thanks for adding the sundial (node/10057049284/history) and bike parking (node/10057049288/history).

There are a few small comments I'd like to make.
The first is that the "name" tag should only be used for the actual names of objects, not for descriptions.
In way/1098386130/history, instead of adding the name "wood chip path to McCone", you should instead use the "surface" tag like "surface=woodchips" (see surface=*).
The sundial (node/10057049284/history) doesn't need "name=Sun Dial" unless that's its actual name. It's fine for objects to not have a name at all!
Check out the OpenStreetMap Wiki (name=*) for more guidance here.

For the tree node/10057049283, "denotation=ribbon_tree" isn't a value that's used elsewhere (see https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/search?q=denotation%3Dribbon_tree).
It might be useful to tag that tree as "tourism=artwork" (tourism=artwork) or "historic=memorial" (historic=memorial).
I know which tree you're talking about (the one with colorful ribbons that people have attached to it), but I can't remember off the top of my head what the purpose of the ribbons are or what they're supposed to represent.
I've added a "fixme" tag in changeset/126906367 so other mappers might fill in more details when they survey nearby.

Again, thanks for making changes.

You might check out an application like StreetComplete (https://github.com/streetcomplete/StreetComplete/), which is a fun game on your phone that involves solving OpenStreetMap "quests".

Hi Kate,

Welcome to OpenStreetMap!

I see in this changeset that you've tried to add the archway on the path to 4.0 Hill.
The node you added though (node/10059999533/history) was tagged as "leisure=park", which was not the correct tag for it.
This tag is only used for entire parks, not features that might be within a park (see leisure=park).
A better tag for the arch might have been "barrier=entrance" (barrier=entrance), which you would add on the path.

Another small issues is that you tagged the node as "name=arch to 4.0 hill".
In OSM, "name" refers to the actual name of an object, not a description for it.
You might use "description" (description=*) or "note" (note=*) to describe the object instead.

The tagging system in OpenStreetMap can be initially confusing to beginners, but don't be discouraged!
You might check out an application like StreetComplete (https://github.com/streetcomplete/StreetComplete/), which is a fun game on your phone that involves solving OpenStreetMap "quests".
It's a much easier introduction to editing the map that's less prone to making tagging mistakes.
In fact, StreetComplete is how I got started making edits!

Also, check out the OpenStreetMap Wiki (osm.wiki/) for guidance, as well as tutorials like https://learnosm.org/en/beginner/ or osm.wiki/Beginners%27_guide.

Hi lmcslssslsssl,

Thanks for removing the closed business, but the node you deleted also had address information attached to it.
Is this address vacant now?
Rather than deleting the whole node, it's usually better to tagged it as disused (see disused:shop=*).

I've undeleted the address in changeset/126158081, but if this is an error, let me know.

Thanks!

924 Gilman isn't called The Caning Shop. That sign refers to 926 Gilman (which can be see at https://www.flickr.com/photos/wallyg/6834887116).
The Caning Shop's website is https://www.caning.com/.
The music venue (https://www.924gilman.org/about/) is just called "924 Gilman".

What kind of information did you want added?
I've made some changes in changeset/125923204.
Note that the "opening_hours" tag requires a specific format (see opening_hours=*), and "phone" should include country code (see phone=*).
I've also added some details from your website, but it says you're still only open by appointment only. Which hours are correct?
If your hours have changed, you should make sure to keep the website updated as well.
Thanks!

Dogman15 mostly fixed Lee's Deli in changeset/125724010.

I've fixed the other errors mentioned here in changeset/125757505.

Thanks again, Dogman15, for resolving some of my fixmes (node/9968860003/history)!

125724010 over 3 years ago

Hi Dogman15,

You might take a look at osm.wiki/Good_changeset_comments.

Thanks for trying to fix node/4468299590/history, but it was originally an "amenity=fast_food", not a "shop=deli".
In JOSM you can check the history of an object using "Control+H", but I'm not sure what the equivalent in iD is. =/

There was also another Lee's Deli that was accidentally changed in changeset/125395289, but I've fixed it and a few others in changeset/125757505.

125393227 over 3 years ago

I've reverted a few changes in changeset/125824604.

CB2 is a division of Crate & Barrel, but isn't a Crate & Barrel itself. There also used to be a Crate & Barrel near Union Square, but it recently went out of business.

Trailblazer Cafe in Salesforce Park isn't a Starbucks, but is probably operated by Starbucks. I'm actually not sure if it's open currently, but the sign is still there.

I've changed the operator for node/5870674310/history, but admittedly I'm not sure how to verify this "on the ground".

Also, thanks Dogman15 for resolving one of my fixmes (node/9919959747)! :D
It's a pain to add brand info using OsmAnd.

I passed by Lee's Deli (node/4468299590/history) earlier today. It's definitely not a chain that sells chicken, it sells dim sum and other Chinese food. You can see some pictures I took in note/3343088.

Would you mind fixing this error and the others mentioned by oba510?
