I've been mapping the island of Utila in Honduras, next to Roatan - this is a major tourist destination and has lots of shops etc. The problem is the main street curves in a way which means that all the names don't show up on the items I've put down (well most of them):

I've been mapping using the high resolution Yahoo imagery in Tunisia near Tunis. The streets are incredibly clear and easy to map, it's quite satisfying...

I worked on the streets in SE London yesterday (giving names, tweaking errors) and now the area seems to be blank! It's not just purely blank, the areas (residential etc) are there, but the streets themselves are missing:

We want to put OSM in as a layer on the maps - can you help?

The current maps are done using our own software that takes digital elevation data and plots the colours accordingly (with a bit of shadow).

We have made it turn into Mercator projection and just need to turn the maps into tile numbers, so that they fit under the OSM maps. I think we might need to create our own tile server (??) and pull updates from OSM as well. Can you help advise and code?

I've been doing Walsall, Mapnik doesn't show it, but the link on this diary entry does... Switch between Mapnik and Osmarender to see the difference...

I noticed on a trip to Walsall and Wolverhampton yesterday that most of the place is relatively unmapped (much to my pleasure!)... I wonder if this is the case for most of the northern UK, in which case I would have an excuse for a few weekends in a rent a car with some good music and driving around getting lost and unlost!

I got the virtual machine "Tiles @ home in a box" installed from

It seems to be showing "Error uploading tile_xx_yyyy_zzzz_abcdef.zip" (xx, yyyy etc are the tile numbers):
500 Internal Server Error
Failed to retrieve server queue load. Assuming full queue.

Otherwise it's chugging away downloading tile areas and processing them into tiles. I did have to make sure to use my email address for the OSM login rather than the username.

What is this about?

And how can I view my latest edits directly using this nice virtual box, as well as processing the tiles that need to be done?

I started mapping Dalyan (Muğla province of Turkey), near Dalaman. There appear to be _no_ maps of this at all online, including on Yahoo, Google Maps, or even just hand-drawn maps - which is kinda exciting!

The area is absolutely beautiful, right next to a river, with cute little streets and provincial looking houses, vegetables patches and restaurants with views over the tombs of Caunos (etched into the hillside).

Anyway - if anyone has any tips for a relative newbie (my main frustration is wanting to see the results rendered!) please message me...

Is there any way at all to see your results semi-immediately via Mapnik? Osmarender seems to do a poor job of placing close-knit features (pubs and restaurants close to each other).

I am Linux-conversant and could install a virtual machine etc, if that's what it takes!

I am adding various features like pubs, bars, nightclubs, pharmacies, supermarkets and so on and noticed there is a "phone" field. But what about the street number? How do you specify that?

Are there other fields that should go in a thoroughly-specified node (feature/amenity/shop)?

I am filling out the various pubs, bars and clubs in London am wondering if amenity=pub is fine for all of these categories.
