Looking for webinar panellists: Colonialism in Open Data and Mapping

Frankly, I don’t understand @imagico’s concerns, all panelists except one moderator are non-native English speakers to my knowledge. And since I share the same nationality with @imagico, I am much more interested in understanding and reflecting on our colonial history and its impact on our own behavior than pointing fingers at others.

I look forward to learning more. Thank you, Pete, for organizing this event and thanks to the panelist for sharing their perspectives on the map.

Probably not what you are looking for in this panel. But maybe interesting for an event about this topic in a different setting with people coming together and more time. The movie spears from all sides is treating the topic of colonialism and maps quite a lot, with maps being build by outsiders (foreigners, national government and patrol extraction companies) with commercial interest and local community with particular insight and own exploration of what and how to show. A good starting point for reflection and conversation, in my humble opinion.

The use of Free and Open Source Software in the OpenStreetMap Foundation

Thanks, @IpswichMapper for the nice comments!

This is not to force anybody. We want to show and give constructive alternatives that are as much fun as OpenStreetMap itself. Clearly, we want the communications to reach as many people as possible and it is not about encouraging anybody to move entirely away from Twitter/Facebook and Youtube. The OSMF has a FOSS Policy that basically says, it is better if there is an open solution first and a proprietary solution second. In the end, I’m very much convinced, people can and should decide for themselves.

Is there any chance that OSMF could host a Matrix (or other F/LOSS Slack competitor) alternative?

In this very first report, we wanted to address the most urgent and easily solvable matters. And in particular, we only looked at the OSMF with the official bodies (neither local chapters, nor software communities). We are well aware of the unsatisfactory chat situation. However, in the OSMF groups, IRC and Matrix are quite common and only Telegram seems to be used as a proprietary tool (with explicit reference to the server).

On the other hand, chats are the most difficult to discuss. I have seen many groups talking endlessly without coming to an end. Although I agree with you that a FLOSS chat tool would be great to have. We propose to address the urgent issues and recommendations in the report and move to chat discussion as a second step.

Gitea has been added to the report. And we are actually thinking about offering hosting an instance for the community to see if there is interest in using it.

Really tank you all for these very interesting discussions!

SimonPoole, you are right. We should add Gitea together with Gitlab as an option - probably it is worth including it as such in the report. Will ask if this is still possible.

jambamkin, we haven’t looked at that so far, thanks for bringing it up. The current event organization with Pretalx and Pretix doesn’t seem to be a wrong direction from our point of view. But if there is room for improvement, it is good to have the tool you mention on our screen.

Good point, ImreSamu! In this first report we wanted to highlight the most important and also “easy to address” or practical points. We do see there is more to do in the future, and more to envision. So, I appreciate you throwing in the open hardware aspect, too.

Yes, we took a closer look at Gitea and we like it a lot! (I personally host it myself and am also very happy with it) It’s much easier to maintain than Gitlab. But it seems quite difficult to connect to OSM’s OAuth, and it has a bit less social interaction features. In the end, we based our recommendation on Debian’s decision and their Salsa (with Gitlab). In any case, Gitea is definitely a good option too!

Which countries are still affected?

The US embargoed countries (I personally checked with friends in Iran but probably it is also the case currently for Cuba, North Korea, Sudan, Syria and Crimea)

Thanks for the feedback. Please take a look at the raw data document (you can toggle the sheets for each of the groups in OSMF) and you can explicitly see why there is a reduction in the number of tools. It is indeed because a single tool sometimes replaces a few others.

Candidate statement for the HOT board elections 2020

Thank you Tyler! I changed “directors” to “staff” in order to avoid any misunderstandings.

GSoC 2017 PT_Assistant plugin for JOSM

Wow, wonderful. Great to see those useful enhancements!

Public Transport Plugin

And a really big THANK YOU for this plugin! It has already being so useful! o/

Public Transport Plugin

I’m having a similar issue with the order of stops in the (bus) route relations, as described by Stephen, the plugin throwing the misleading error messages of “start/end ways need to be split”, but instead the order of bus stops within the relation is mixed up.

Also, an automatic fix of this would be very helpful. Especially because the “Sort relation members” in the “Edit relation” window is not able to sort stops in based on the itinerary. It seems to me, it’d probably rather resort the stops without notice for unaware users. This way it’d be very easy to destroy the work which has been gone into manual sorting.
