The real Problem here is not with old_name at all but with stuff like name:de because old_name is not rendered anywhere an mostly irrelevant. We already had this discussion on the german mailinglist about how and when name:de should be used.

Over here in the west somebody tagged Nancy with name:de=Nanzig which I think is just plain wrong because this name has been in use during the Nazi years only.

Unfortunately it is not that simple in many cases. Take Strasbourg for example which is still called Straßburg by most German people and which will qualify as name:de IMO. There are examples of polish towns as well. Szczecin would be an Example where I would also say Stettin will qualify as name:de. Lets face it I'm afraid there is no political correct solution to this problem, there will always be a gray area.

I have never used this myself, but there is a Live GPS plugin for josm.

OSM Format is Unicode (UTF-8) format which does include hebrew alphabet among many others. So this should simply work.

Oh, something I forgot. Openpistmap does not render T-bars at all this should definitely be fixed.

The origins of OSM and openpistemap are in europe which should explain the colors currently used. European piste colors (and UK road colors) in the maps.

The road coloring problem is difficult to solve, as it is a localization problem rather than a geographic one! Over here in europe we tend to have different coloring schemes for roads in every country!
E.g. germans usually do not agree to the OSM style of blue colored motorways originating from the UK scheme.

I prefer looking at north american ski resorts with my familiar european piste style. Probably you would also prefer to see european resorts in american colors. Rendering different colors for different continents would make the resorts incomparable. A value which we should not destroy IMO, as it did not even exist before openpistmap arose.

People are however free to create their own north american piste map color style.

BTW, to get the names of the runs rendered in openpistemap just use a generic name tag :)

Map Style in garmin maps can be changed by means of a TYP-File. Different Garmin Maps use very different TYP-Files. osm.wiki/OSM_Map_On_Garmin osm.wiki/All_in_one_Garmin_Map

Die Tracks dienen lediglich als Vorlage ähnlich wie ein Luftbild. Wichtiger Tipp für Anfänger: GPS Gerät Aufzeichung auf 1 Punkt pro Sekunde einstellen.

@aeonesa: Dagegen ist zu sagen dass die Städte auf deutsch einfach nicht so heißen. Oder würdest Du auch Lisboa statt Lissabonn bevorzugen?

Wir haben hier im Westen (in Elsass/Lothringen) ein ähnliches Problem. Nanzig für Nancy habe ich sogar selber rausgeworfen. Bei Mühlhausen und Straßburg hingegen finde ich name:de absolut in Ordnung. Wie ALE! bereits geschrieben hat. Es kommt halt drauf an.

Vielleicht schaust Du auch mal ins Archiv der Mailingliste das wurde im Zusammenhang mit dem deutschen Rendering auf dem Wikimedia Toolserver bereits diskutiert.

Ältere Geräte (etrex/gpsmap) können nur ein gmapsupp.img verarbeiten. Wenn Du mehrere Karten kombinieren möchtest kannst Du das kostenlose Programm (leider keine freie Software im GNU Sinn) gmaptool verwenden.

Da ich Linuxuser bin habe ich mich mit Mapsource nie beschäftigt! Vergiss das Programm.

Es ist extrem einfach OSM Karten auf dem Garmin zu nutzen. Man benötigt überhaupt gar keine Spezialsoftware!

Man kopiert einfach die fertige Karte gmapsupp.img z.B. diese hier: osm.wiki/DE:All_in_one_Garmin_Map auf die Speicherkarte und gut iss. Das macht man entweder indem man das Gerät in den Massenspeichermodus schaltet, dann taucht es als Laufwerk auf oder mit Hilfe eines Kartenlesers am PC.

Looking at the scripts in the POI_list directory I think you should allow for regular expressions in the value part of the key/value tuples. Furthermore it would be nice to be able to declare classes of e.g. banks and extract them as a single POI type.

The reason why I think this would be nice is that while looking at the bank.py script I was wondering if it would be possible to add code to extract all the banks where I can get money without paying an additional fee. Examples for such classes in germany would be alliances like "cash-pool" or "cash-group"

AFAIK kann somanches Garmingerät nur schlecht mit nicht-ASCII Zeichen. Die Erzeugung von latin1-Zeichen kann bei mkgmap über den Schalter "--latin1" aktiviert werden. Bei der All In One Garminkarte ist dieser aktiviert.
