Changeset When Comment

Hello,

You cannot have cycleway=track and bicycle=no (or bicycle=use_sidepath) simultaneously on a road.

Since bicycle tracks are drawn as separate ways here, I only kept bicycle=use_sidepath on the main road, no more.

Hello,

I am writing here because you requested a review for this changeset.

Globally good.
I did some minor fixes, mostly typos (École, not Ecole; Ludothèque, not Ludothque), removing address tags when those are not necessary. The rule is: if the point is inside a building with a single address → write nothing; otherwise you may add the housenumber and the street name (full name in French and Dutch exactly like it is written on the road), no more.

Plus a few minor things: added "takeaway=only" for Capoue because according to their website it’s just a counter (some Capoue parlours are bigger and people can get inside to eat, so it’s nice if our data can say what to expect).

If you read my comment on the changeset page on osm.org, you can also see the list of all the objects you changed, under this text.
If you click on any of them, you will see its current status on the database. If you see your name as the last contributor, it means I didn’t change it because it was just perfect, and otherwise you can see my changes, in particular the explanations.

Just one last thing: try to make smaller edits: change just one or two places in a street and THEN press the upload button, and only then move on to another area. Single changesets covering a large territory, like this one, are harder to understand or review.

Have a nice day.

Hello,

I don’t know why you are stating that the default speed limit in Brussels in 50 km/h. This is no longer true.
The default speed limit is 30 km/h since January 2021.

There are a few streets with a higher speed limit. They are explicitely marked with C43 signs, which are repeat after every intersection.

Despite being quite large and "feeling" like being on a major boulevard, Ch. Waterloo/Waterloosestwg and Av. L. Lepoutrelaan have a 30 km/h speed limit.

We had to undo your changes, sorry.

Hello,

Don’t forget exemptions for cyclists when you add a one-way tag, otherwise it breaks cycle routing.

I fixed this one, based on latest Mapillary imagery: way/30442763

Hello,

Thanks for adding more objects to the map. We appreciate your surveys.

Your contributions created many validation issues. Please take some time reading those warnings:

1) Addresses.
If you add a single point inside an existing building, like here, then the place will automatically get the address from the building. No need to repeat the address.

More importantly, please be extremely careful when writing the name of streets: "Chausses de Vleurgat" is not a correct spelling.
And especially for Brussels: all street names are always written in French AND Dutch. Your latest edits have been flagged as potential vandalism because you always write the addresses in one language and ignored the other, people might consider it offensive mapping.

2) Opening hours.
I know it is complicated but here is some hints: the opening hours engine will analyse the text string from left to right and will overwrite previous definitions when it finds them.
If a restaurant is open Mondays to Fridays for lunch and has extra evenings on Thursdays and Fridays, do NOT do this: "Mo-Fr 11:00-14:00; Th,Fr 19:00-23:00". Because when the software will come to the "Th,Fr" part it will erase what it saw before for those days, and will believe that the restaurant is only open in the evening on those days. The correct syntax is "Mo-We 11:00-14:00; Th,Fr 11:00-14:00,19:00-23:00".
In case you are interested to learn, we have an easy tool to generate the correct strings here: https://projets.pavie.info/yohours/

3) Other tags.
If the restaurant offers vegan dishes, you can add tags like diet:vegan=yes. Don’t worry, I found the text in the notes and changed that.

I know it’s not easy to do advanced mapping with a smartphone. In the meantime, I fixed everything I found in your latest contributions.

Hello,

Thanks for the document.

Just for the record: bicycle specialist @StefDeGreef has been extensively monitoring this area in the first semester of 2022, and explained to us he was working hard with forest guards to ensure access permissions were properly set on paths because they are having a really hard time with cyclists using paths which are found on "official"—and possibly outdated—documents but are locally signposted as forbidden. He spent a lot of time carefully arranging highway type and access permissions.

I hope you will put equal care if you want to change things in this area, not just mechanically applying what this document from 2021 says.

One more thing: in Belgium, highway=path automatically grants moped=yes, mofa=yes, horse=yes, speed_pedelec=yes, bicycle=yes and foot=yes. Don’t forget to turn off permissions for unwanted users.

Have a nice day.

Hello,

Thanks for this.
We have a validation issue here.

ramp=* is the generic tag.
ramp:bicycle=yes means there is a ramp for bicycles along the stairs.

If you add ramp:bicycle=yes, make sure ramp=yes is set too.

I fixed those two stairs, you don’t have to do it.

You are not trolling, right?

The reason is: We had to make *choices*.
There is no ISO-639-* for this dialect.

The most legitimate choice was to create a new value. "name:bru" was entirely free because there was no single use of it in the entire OSM database.

The wiki says this: "Many languages, including widely spoken or written ones, are defined inaccurately or uncoded for in the existing ISO codes, so the tagging necessarily deviates from them where appropriate."

The risk of collision with a legitimate name in Eastern Bru in this part of the world is close to zero.

If you can find a suitable replacement for "bru" which will satisfy all those criteria, I’d be happy to embrace the new value, update the wiki and the existing data. But I don’t think it is worth the effort.

Hello,

OpenStreetMap is primarily a database. There are several apps using our data, is it not only aimed at making a pretty picture on openstreetmap.org.

That is why we ask people not to map for the renderer but use tags to represent the world as it really is.

If it is a dojo, amenity=dojo is fine. It is one of the items that have been asked to be added to osm-carto, the main renderer. I guess some apps show dojos properly.

Can I please ask you to reconsider whether this place should be restored as amenity=dojo or kept as club=sport.

Thanks.

Hello,

It is always a good idea to make sure to upload your edits *before* travelling to another city. (Alternatively, you can go to Settings > Upload answers automatically in the app.)

Otherwise, they will be uploaded together and create a huge box, covering a huge territory. (This is frustrating for every local user monitoring changes anywhere in between because they will have to review your edit for nothing.)

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

I asked a friend who has lived in this area for about 40 years, and who told me he never heard anybody saying they were going to the "Flotsenberg" when talking about that place. That is a very old name.

Wikipedia articles about the place seems to say the same
https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoogte_Honderd
https://fr.wikipedia.org
/wiki/Altitude_Cent

What do you think?

Hello,

This changeset will be set for review: houses drawn by following aerial imagery instead of correct building outlines from AIV Flanders GRB are probably wrong. :-(

To review later.

The comment above was aimed at the note, to thank the user who surveyed it. No problem with the changeset here, of course.

Hello,

Exactly for the reason I explained in the changeset title. Primary keys such as amenity:* and leisure:* may not be used together. (In the same way that if a hospital is also a shop, we must choose and have either one, or create two POI.)

To solve this, I felt the "leisure=sports_centre" part would describe it more accurately. I don’t have any strong opinion about doing that or the opposite choice (tagging is as a community_centre and dropping the leisure tag).

What would you suggest?

Hello,

Don’t bother about the letter, I trust you for the numbers and I also saw the numbers posted at the gates.

I tried to restore a correct situation, following those instructions.

One problem is: UrbIS is the official reference for buildings in the Brussels-Capital Region and some mappers routinely run scripts to ensure it matches OSM data correctly. UrbIS incorrectly sets numbers 45 and 47 on the main building. I left a note here to ensure that it will not be undone by mistake. I put connectors between the gates and the corresponding addresses for numbers 45 and 49. Also did some improvements of paths and structures, I guess we finally improved it well, thanks.

Last thing: the area is named "École des Vétérinaires" because it’s the name of the Wikipedia article associated with it. The school obviously closed several decades ago, we might want to rename it into "Ancienne école…" but I don’t know if there are official sources with an official name to be used here.

This question is just in case you are interested in this area and willing to do more research. If you don’t feel like it or have no particular interest for this place, don’t bother, and no reply is needed nor expected. ;-)

Hello,

I reverted this.
Osmose gives tons of false positives when it comes about streets around the border between Belgian regions. This is because Osmose is quite a simple tool and cannot manage cases like this when the street is exactly on the border. The best action is to ignore them.

Otherwise, names in Brussels use FR - NL, names in Flanders are NL (or NL - FR in municipalities with facilities) but definitely not FR only. ;-)

128692224 about 3 years ago

Hello,

Welcome to OSM.

I must inform you that we had to undo your changes here (this one and the 4 other changes on the same building on tne same day). You certainly have good intentions but the way you moved objects on the database is incorrect. Faking housenumbers on gates creates a useless map for navigation. Plus lots of technical issues caused by those changes (bad connectors with landuse areas, unwanted postcodes on addresses and more).
I am ready to help you a little if you can tell me what you really wanted to achieve here and how we can help.
Have a nice day.

Hello,

Thanks for this but try not to repeat "docteur" or "dentiste" in the name. The amenity tag is already there for that, and will generate an appropriate icon. Just the name of the doctor, no more. This is even more important in Brussels, since there is more than one language.
