Changeset When Comment

Hi there @thefra. A couple of things that new mappers should be aware of: 1) try to make smaller changes that don't span large geographic areas. 2) ways shouldn't zigzag all over the place. they need to reflect "ground truth".

I've deleted several of the ways that you've created as they make no sense.

Hi McClintock. Nice to see that your class has spurred some interest in adding to OSM. I made some changes to your "Sidewalk" and wanted to let you know about them so that you can improve your skills. The first change was that I removed the name "Sidewalk" from path since it really isn't a named sidewalk. In general, objects should be named with a description of what they are, they should only be named if they actually have a name. I see this often with parking lots improperly named "Parking" for example. Another problem with the sidewalk is that it technically isn't a sidewalk in that it doesn't border a street. It is more of a footpath so I removed the sidewalk tag. And lastly, it was connect to East 19th, but from the satellite images, it doesn't look like it actually continues on to the street. I removed that connection and added a bunch more paths around the area. My changeset is here: changeset/66971636

Thanks for contributing. If you ever need help, please reach out. I'm happy to lend a hand to new mappers.

Why were those footpaths deleted? Was there a problem with them?

Can these really be considered parks? There must be a better classification for them. Especially since Shakespeare Garden is so micro.

Hi revent, many of the points in this change set already belonged to existing ways and your change has somehow moved them to the point where the ways no longer make any sense. I'd like to revert this changeset, but I wanted you to have a chance to manually revert the ways that are broken due to your change first. A (possible subset) of the broken ways are:

way/168663239
way/224020919
way/479417367
way/153687677
way/92789869
way/224020938

I'm seeing several errors in your imports where a way will double back on itself. For instance: way/664255445. JOSM *should* be indicating this is an error if you use validation.

FYI, way/663050651 was added where a road way already exists. I'm going to copy your surface=asphalt tag over to the older way and delete yours. Hope that's okay.

Looks much more "purdy" now. :)
Thanks for taking care of it.

Happy to help! I check a daily report for errors and do my best to keep the country cleaned up of a couple specific error types.

No problem! I don't mind cleaning up here and there if it means that map gets more detailed in the process.

Hi there MapperKB, I just wanted to let you know that I've deleted way/651844695 since it is a footway that is traced directly on top of a residential road. The wiki discussion on highway=residential (osm.wiki/Talk:Tag:highway%3Dresidential) states: "You can definitively walk on residential roads, unless tagged otherwise". So there is no need to draw a footway over a residential way. If you wanted to indicate there are sidewalks, there are a couple different ways that you can do that. Hope this helps.

Hi CMC, thanks for contributing to the map. However, there is already a more detailed object for that church in the database and yours doesn't appear to add anything new, so I'm going to go ahead and delete it. If you feel this is in error, please let me know.

Hi there WallOfKron. Thanks for contributing to OSM. Are you living in the area, or mapping from afar? I enjoy having more people map the area around me. One thing to note though is that roads shouldn't overlap with each other and I noticed that a couple of the ways that were created around Gateway Mall (or Shoppes or whatever it is called now) were overlapping. I've fixed them, but figured it would be good to let you know for your future mapping. Thanks.

I'm unaware of any. I'm not sure why I didn't change this myself either, so thanks for taking care of the update.

As far as I can tell, that 2nd member of the relation is unneeded as it includes 4 nodes that are already included in the larger (158 node) way. I'd say remove the short way, delete the relation and let that long way stand alone.

For way/661623728, I'm not sure making a grassy area extend over and beyond a road is a good idea. It's as if you are saying the road is grass too, and I'm guessing that is highly unlikely.

Hi @mglykins, I see you had some problems when creating this river bank. Are you planning on going back and finishing it up soon? As it stands, it is an invalid geometric object since it is missing a lot of points and has a long, straight line that crosses over itself. Also, it doesn't have any tags to say what it is that you were drawing. I'm assuming a river bank. Let me know if I can help.

Another example of a node moved far away from the rest of the way: node/84327507

Hi 25or6to4. I've seen a similar pattern happen recently with "city boundary" changes that you're making and thought I'd mention it in an attempt to prevent it from happening in the future. Somehow, you are moving the point of an existing way (road/path/etc) when you are modifying city boundaries and this tends to make the way inaccurate. Check out this node for example: node/380230803

Great. Thanks! Happy new year to you as well. Maybe I'll learn how to properly do bus routes in the new year.
