search of the street in GPS

Maybe it could also be improved by some change in the Garmin software. However, the full street name should be at OSM. Everything else (fault tolerant search) is up to the software. A minor exception (likely not relevant here) are other/alternative/common short names for the street, see osm.wiki/Names#Key_Variations

Ciao wojmar, welcome to OSM!

Well, where is the street? What about you just change it by yourself if you know that this street is named otherwise (look on the street signs - not on other maps). Do you need any help?

If you cannot edit yourself, leave a note - it is on the symbol bar bottom on the osm.org map page, see osm.wiki/IT:Notes

Right! You hit the right spot! :-) Not only you can write your diary here, but also everybody can see it.

Welcome to OSM!

Automated road tracing - "Microsoft Road Detect" didn't work for me

Also see https://help.openstreetmap.org/questions/25735/is-there-a-possibility-to-automatically-make-a-map-from-the-shape-of-lakes-and-ground-of-the-bing-map for a recent “discussion”

using osm on a phone

“Why is there no mobile version?” - I really think it is very simple: because nobody did one! There are only volunteers at OSM and it is much work to maintain everything - so be the one who does it! ;-) I guess Talk:WikiProject Cleanup would be the best place to discuss it (trac ticket system mentioned on top of Talk:Wiki for a direct technical solution/code/whatever). Wikpedia has a mobile version which is AFAIK powered by the MobileFronted extension (installed in Wikipedia but not in the OSM wiki).

Same goes for the front/main page - help to improve it! Make your suggestions there (if there is not already a section discussing that). :-)

on the official garmin page http://support.garmin.com/support/manuals/manuals.htm?partNo=010-00899-00&language=en&country=US you can get a list (“View publications in all languages”) of all available languages of the manual. However, Japanese is not listed. And on http://www.garmin.co.jp/products/intosports/edge800 there does not seem to be a link to a manual.

Dear OSM diary, and new friends stumbling in the doorway here

Hi Charlie, I am not aware that bing is using OSM data (except bing’s military area blurring). The other way round, we are allowed to trace from bing’s aerial imagery.

External Captcha

Agree. Also see:

The latter is the best place to discuss the wiki, I guess - well, as long as you do not post external URLs (triggering the captcha) and already have an account.

First Thoughts

Welcome to OpenStreetMap, John! :-)

To find active mappers in your local area the two tools listed at “Nearby users” in the wiki will help you. Following are the links to both tools, already centred on the location you made an edit at:

Not really many active… Note that those users are not necessarily living in the edited area.

You can start here: Beginner’s guide or http://learnosm.org/ We also have a help centre (collecting questions useful to more than one person) and the shorter FAQ.

If you need help and cannot find out otherwise, just ask someone who “runs” by - e.g. those who comment here.

A tip at your first edit: should get tags what it is. Would chalet fit? You can select it in the editor Potlatch2 on the left side → accomodation or you can use the Advanced mode to type the tag manually? The building outline could be added as separate object. It can be traced from the aerial imagery background supplied in Potlatch2 - the OSM data editor which you used.

Just play a bit with the editor, if you accidentally break something it can be restored. Start slowly, but just try it.

Thanks for your help at OSM!

Hmm, why do you copy the wiki page text to your diary?!
