East Africa Tagging Guidelines on the Wiki

Ok, The page says “This tag should only be used for highways providing access to agricultural facilities. Never use Track to mark an unpaved or unsealed road that does not serve agricultural purposes and should therefore be tagged otherwise! “

So an unpaved road in a National Park, Wildlife Reserve etc … cannot be a track? If it is sealed .. it can be a track? I mark the smaller unpaved National Park management tracks as track around here .. and that is what they are called by the ‘locals’. They look, feel and ride the same as ‘agricultural tracks’.

I think you need to remove the references to paved/unpaved from the highway classifications .. put paved/unpaved at the top. Then do the classifications, the classification should be separate from the surface. But it is my opinion! Get some others too.

Please note the Australian view, not only on highway classification but towns too. .

East Africa Tagging Guidelines on the Wiki

Hi, Thanks for your work. There are similarities to Australia .. lack of motorways etc. You might consider the page osm.wiki/Australian_Tagging_Guidelines for ideas?

Roads .. I’ve several differences to what is on osm.wiki/East_Africa_Tagging_Guidelines.

Firstly the paved or unpaved ‘problem’. I’d put this first before the road categories. At the moment a highway=track looks like it must be paved!

Secondly - unclassified roads can be used to link suburbs in a city/town .. so they can be used in urban areas.

Third … Track does not have to be used with track_type .. it is ‘nice’ when it is used but not a requirement.

There are probably some others too.

I’ll not do such ‘editorials’ myself .. I’d rather you reread it .. and compare it to the main wiki pages .. maybe even read the Australian page .. and they see what you think.

Charging stations (carto v2.30.0) *rolling tumbleweed*

1) Rendering to ‘the map’? There are various OSM maps .. some of them bicycle specific .. and some of those at least have shown bicycle parking for some time. It is not possible for one map to show all that OSM has.

2) “Charging Stations” .. may be taken as not vehicle specific. There is discussion on this within the tagging group. It may progress to being used for ‘charging stations’ for laptops/phones in airports… Access to these ‘stations’ may be stated using the access tag. Payment methods are available by the fee tag.

I’d like to see ‘motor vehicle charging stations’ and ‘bicycle charging stations’ as separate tags. They have different on the ground appearance and different requirements.

The power of change rests in the hands of the many

Contributions; There is lots that can be done from satellite views. Some make mechanical additions from open sources.

These are all valuable and may be large in volume.

But the contributions made by the person on the ground may be small in volume and impact on the map… but some of these cannot be done any other way! Those are very valuable - the cost of sending a person to some far away place they don’t know to map features would be very large indeed. And as they don’t know it they will probably miss things.

So even a small contribution maybe very valuable.

Improving the OSM map - Why don't we? [5]

Location: I have seen note with the lat/log stated on a node …. I move the node to the correct lat/log and had good agreement between the feature and bing sat view. So it is a way of ensuring the location remains with the node .. no matter if some one moves it.

Note to other mappers: I have made comments for mappers who may question a feature , for clarification.

There are many uses for the note key.. not just for the person making the note.

Update JOSM to fix the Java Logjam

Well .. I’ve updated JOSM.. and have Java 8 v 45 .. the latest..

still have time delays … uploading 20 objects .. takes .. +5 minutes…

The update to the latest JOSM look to have fixed things.. but I think it is time of day sensitive .. as in there is a substantial load somewhere delaying things..

Google Map Maker is Down

Google say the shut down is due to vandalism. Think OSM can do without that kind of ‘help’.

Google say they won’t open it up until they can deal with the input without creating a large backlog.

map styles: Default OSM vs Google Maps

The reverse problem arises in places with less population/motorways …

Look at the continents of Africa and Australia .. you don’t see much zoomed out. For those places rendering highways of less significance would be beneficial when zoomed out.

When zoomed in there is little point in rendering the major city name … it just clutters the screen.

The rendering at various zoom levels should take into account the density that results on the screen .. too much is bad .. too little is bad too. The rendering ‘rules’ need to adjust for the resultant density … not a ‘rule’ that is fixed for the world. A single fixed rule may work for one country .. or several if they have similar population densities and infrastructure, but that will not work well world wide.

Hide existing edit

Oh .. another way …

In JOSM it has layers .. you can create a layer where you work - hiding the original OSM layer …

the image is on another layer automatically

You can then merge the layers ..

Be careful not to duplicate things … having two buildings where there is one is not good.

Hide existing edit

Zoom in (use the ‘+’ button on the key board?) as others have said.

Select an image for background information too… I find that is very helpful. Zooming in may eventually loose the image but you may need to do it for detail, just zoom out to check the image info from time to time.

Are you trying to change an existing node/way (one already in OSM)? Then be very careful … click on the feature and read all its existing tags .. especially any ‘note’ tag that may give you more information .. or even a ‘fixme’ tag !

Merging .. not something I’d do… much easier to edit the existing thing.

I’m pleased your not deleting things .. that is something I had to learn the hard way.

Good Luck.

These are noted. Religions

Taginfo records things within OSM …

If you want to tag someplace with another religion .. then do so!!!

And then document it in OSM and link that document page to religion=*

Job done. I tag what is of interest to me, as do many others who contribute to OSM. If you are concerned with the lack of religious diversity then by all means add the data.

Going to be using OSM for my charity walk next year, need some advice.

OsmAnd has a good pedestrian display mode.

On the Garmin maps .. you can download OSM maps for Garmins. These are not Garmins proprietary maps but the same maps you get with OsmAnd, just differently rendered. Selecting a particular Garmin model .. you’d want a long battery life. Some will last several days on one set of batteries.

Solar power is all well and good, but don’t have it connected to the phone while you walk .. the connection is not robust. Connect the solar panel to another battery and charge that during the day. At night while you sleep charge the phones battery from the solar battery. The solar battery should have at least twice the capacity as the phone battery .. that will give you 3 days of use before you get a flat battery without solar charging.

What to do for OSM? Collect things that are not on the map .. paths, shops, drinking water, hotels. In particular anything that you find helpful while you are traveling. This helps the next person, advertises good services (hotels and shops that are good should be supported).

Have a good trip. Just before you leave - download the latest OSM map they do change thanks to contributes like yourself.

Where do you swim in OSM?

Hi,

Nice thought … but here people have been building swimming pools that are in/on the ocean and use the ocean water for replenishment … In Sydney, Australia since 1932 at least e.g.

Bike Shop

If your asking someone to add a bike shop to the OSM map .. you’ll need to say where it is. Latitude & Longitude. And you could also give a name ..and any other details… does it do repairs for instance …

shop=bicycle

There are over 22,800 tag with shop=bicycle within the OSM data base.

Proposed talk at both SOTUM and HOTOSM conferences!!

There are many areas of the world with active land mines.

Some use the proximity warning system of their GPS to warn them of the approach of a land mine area .. similar to speed cameras but with a possibly greater penalty. I think that is a good approach as the GPS can give an audio warning as well as a screen message.

Having them on the map too may benefit trip planning.. Oh .. some are not ‘land mines’ but unexploded bombs… Some place you are advised not the leave the road … Need to pee? Do it on the road… There is a bit of ‘local’ information that goes with the ‘land mine danger’ information. But I see no reason for it not to be mapped .. as a node/way/area.

OS Street View Copyright Easter Egg

That would indicate that OS data is not too trustworthy! Well spotted.

I’d then only take OS data if OSM did not have data on the object. And naturally attribute the source.

If there is a discrepancy between OS and OSM then flag OSM data for checking .. but don’t change it untill OS data is confirmed. If the OSM data is correct then add a note or use the tag check_date=2011-11-12 (example only of 12 Nov 2011).

Improving the OSM map - Why don't we? [2]

@ mcid .. The Garmin is presenting the information rendered. It is the render that may be at fault, not necessarily the GPS. The render could have as a separate POI ‘chain tool’ for example.

@ marczoutendijk A Tag:amenity=bicycle_repair_station is not a bicycle repair shop, tagged Tag:shop=bicycle .. with sub tags for the repair option. I don’t think the bicycle_repair_station tag was discussed on a talk group .. thus may lack some good ideas? As the bicycle_repair_station is open to the public it may be subject to vandalism .. and I don’t know if they’d carry spare parts.. if I had a problem requiring tools .. I’d probably want parts too .. so I’d be looking for a bicycle shop. Something with people in it .. even if they don’t have what is required they ‘d probably be able to direct me to somewhere better equipped. Diverting to a bicycle_repair_station would not be my first option.

================== Oh .. a correction .. the name is Bryce.. not Brice…

Improving the OSM map - Why don't we? [3]

I and others have had comments made that discourage participation on OSM talk lists.. Generally I ignore them. Some regard the ‘newbies’ as a disturbance that should go away and learn how to do things without disturbing them. Another advises going and mapping them first before talking to the talk group .. then presenting it. The truth is that these are ‘talk’ groups .. designed for talking.. if some on them cannot tolerate errors, mistakes and lots of talk .. then who should leave? Some have taken the hint and don’t participate in the talk groups for that reason. I think some reside on the talk groups to sabotage them!

I too would encourage others to join the talk groups. The more ideas the better I say on any issue/problem. Then one idea can be selected as to the best resolution.

But as to these singular tags .. I think those are ‘errors’ .. end of a long day etc. Possibly ‘private’ marks made by a local mapper for their own reference. Perhaps a new key of test=* or even junk=* could be used for these local mappers private marks? Never know unless they are asked?

Improving the OSM map - Why don't we? [2]

Oh .. and Brices ‘bicycle repair station’ import was in Australia and New Zealand and only in a very few localities.. so small and localized.

Improving the OSM map - Why don't we? [2]

The very basic ‘bicycle repair station’ must repair flat tyres.. this occurs far more frequently that chain failures. So ‘pressurized air supply’? (manual pump or powered source?), tyre leavers, spanners (for those with axle nuts) , purchase of patches/glue? For me that is what ‘makes a bicycle repair station’ not the presence of a chain tool.

Brices import was about 17 stations .. not a large number. The manufacture has various options..

Agree with default values being on the wiki. There are regional variation on some default values though. A start could be made on the wiki of ‘bicycle repair station’? I note that the tag ‘bicycle repair station’ is not an ‘approved’ tag thus has had little if any discussion on it?

Regarding amenity=recycling… I’d like to see this combined with waste disposal .. I’m looking for somewhere to get rid of waste in the first instance .. recycled or not. It would be easier if recycling were a sub tag under ‘waste’.
