| Should we teach JOSM to first-time mapathon attendees? | What is the coverage factor in the confidence interval? Around 2 is usual for metrologists. I don’t think difference of the initial contribution should be a deciding factor. People learn differently. Most would ‘test’ at a later time, so sampling as , say 2 months later for contributions, and the number of nodes added/modified/deleted? With possible follow up at 1 and 2 years? |

| Place Names: Old and New | As well as old_name there is alt_name.. in fact there are a few choices … osm.wiki/Names I think Simon has it right .. but your local so should make your own choice. Getting them on to a map … ‘not our problem’ as taggers. |

| A Mapper in the Spotlight: Dave Swarthout (USA/Thailand) | Comment … I have broken a rib from a camera carried on my body when I fell from my motorcycle. Would have been fine without the camera! Either put it in a tank bag or find a handle bar mount for it Dave. |

| Dealing with incorrect tags in Africa | While you maybe ‘correct’ in an absolute sense complying with the OSM definitions … There is the consideration that these definitions were worked out by people in very well developed and rich countries with high population densities of well off people. That is not the case in Africa. The ‘importance’ of the road may not be reflected in the number of lanes, surface, smoothness or as you have stated in its official classification. Thus the official ‘OSM classification’ can be inappropriate in some circumstances. Further reading … osm.wiki/Highway_Tag_Africa I would suggest you contact at least some of the previous mappers to get their views directly. |

| JR Gyoda Station | While taking several GPS tracks may be ‘good’ over a few hours.. try a day or three. I have found my GPS to be off by 10 metres on one occasion - switched it off and back on to find it much better. A simple cycling of the supply ‘fixed’ that then, I have no idea of what was going on with it. Having said all that … what is most important is that the resulting map ‘appears’ to the user to be a faithful representation of what is on the ground. If their GPS is off by 10 meters .. they may well accept it as either an error in their GPS or the map … as long as the map detail is reconcilable by what is found on the ground. |

| email rejected | You will need to leave more information if you want help. There are lots of ‘shops’ around the world. There are lots of UK maps. Be specific …
What ‘shop’? Ordnance Survey Map? OSM here stands for Open Street Map. Ordnance Survey map is usually abbreviated to OS. |
|
| Mapping my hometown Rajahmundry | The imagery alignment … may be different within the same image — due to parallax and height changes for example. Given that the GPS may be out by up to 10 meters then discrepancies in the map may not be as easy for the user to resolve. As long as the map ‘looks’ like the visual world that the user sees, then user will probably be accepting of any offsets (they could be from their GPS and/or the map). |

| Making the switch from Wikimapia to OpenStreetMap | Welcome to OSM … where things change. Sometimes not the way wanted, but even that is better than no change. :) If you want to do something .. doing it before someone else maybe better than the someones’ idea of it. Having said that .. be carefull. But have fun. Oh .. as a ‘new’ mapper .. try not to delete stuff… has lead me on the path of putting my deletions back in. |

| Units in OpenStreetMap | Unfortunately not everyone uses SI. The data within the OSM data base should not be changed to all SI. Consider that the local use may not be SI units and that rendering there may need reconversion to nonSI units. Each conversion has errors .. and that may result in strange results … e.g 15 tons - to SI units - back but now 14.99 tons … So .. until every one uses the same units .. and drives and walks on the same side .. with the same rules .. with the same signage .. with the same language … Leave the OSM entered data in the units used by the mapper. |

| Automated external defibrillator(AED) locations in County Fermanagh | I don’t think additional data belongs (other than the location and operator)…. The practice in Australia is when used, the ambo comes along and picks up the patent and AED (leaving it connected). As this would leave the site without an AED the ambos leave their AED behind. Thus the date, manufacture data would no longer be relevant. when the AED approaches any expiry data it sets off an alarm .. like the smoke detectors do when their batteries get towards flat. So the things get serviced/replaced … Thus the data and maybe the manufacture data would no longer be relevant. Who would use this data? I think you have it covered. There are very few AEDs on the OSM Australia map… the Australian Organizations are using Google .. and an Ipad app …. short sighted of them I would like to see an ‘emergency’ button on the phone OSM apps … would bring up on the map AEDs, Doctors, Hospitals with emergency facilities, Life belts (rings), Emergency phones, and any other relevant emergency thing? Once this kind of thing is available I would think the case for entering the data would be seen by all the organizations. |
|
| Automated external defibrillator(AED) locations in County Fermanagh | Notes; AEDs can be used by the ‘untrained’ .. that is why they are called “Automatic”. AEDs should be tagged with emergency=defibrillator |
|
| Automated external defibrillator(AED) locations in County Fermanagh | Yep. The best place to have a heart attack is Melbourne Cricket Ground .. many AEDs there. I think the second best place was some airport in America. Suggestions .. Other things that would be usefull to a first aider … locations of fixed phones .. particularly emergency phones locations of hospital emergency departments doctors offices pharmacies This map could be mentioned in first aid courses …. that gets them to use the map, and probably add AEDs to it too. |
|
| Someone deleted a "dangerous" path | Agree .. if it is ‘on the ground’ then it should be there. There is a walking difficulty tag that can be used You may also want to get in touch with the mapper who deleted the way and let them know … www.openstreetmap.org/user/[user_name] … the user_name should be in lower case .. |

| House Numbering and Plot Numbering Around Gaborone | Caution. If you are planing to take the information off these maps into OSM then the maps mast either be copyright free or you have to have permission to use the information. The alternative is to physically go to the streets/plots and use the information publicly displayed to obtain the information and then transfer that into OSM. |

| A Review of the Manifests of all OSM US Board Election Candidates | Nothing wrong with being German, or British come to that. As I am not American I won’t vote on ‘their’ election. Regarding imports as being bad because of wrong data.. ‘we’ get wrong data from individual contributors too. In some ways the imported data is easier to ‘fix’… but there is a lot more of it. Regarding getting more people to contribute data .. the best source would those using OSM as they are ‘on the ground’ and probably noticing missing things. Encouraging them to add that data and then retaining their participation would go a long way to improving the map and expanding the contributors. How to do more of that is the question. |

| tagging cricket nets | There are many sources of this ‘problem’ … The person who identified it as ‘not a sport’ .. on the wiki The person who place it on the wiki as a ‘sport’ Possibly they are members of the tagging mailing list .. I don’t care. They are people and entitled to express their view. I am on the tagging mailing list to learn how to make better tags .. some people there are helpfull .. some are not. There are many more ‘problems’ of this type in OSM tags .. while people continue to accept those ‘problems’ and not seek better ways the ‘problems’ will continue. I’d rather seek a solution that solves this ‘problem’ and gives solutions to ‘problems’ that have not yet occurred. Such as tagging basketball hoops used for practice. “The traditions of the dead generations weight like a nightmare on the brains of the living” Karl Marx 1852. |
|
| tagging cricket nets | Note everyone is on the tagging mailing list (thankfully). Placing it here means there is a wider view. I am firming up on adding a new tag sport_practice= * This replaces the sport tag in those areas where only practice for that sport occurs.. so you can have the usual leisure tags followed by sport_practice=basketball_hoop for example where a hoop is provided to practice shooting baskets… My main quibble is .. it is all very well to point out a problem somewhere .. but what is needed is a solution to that problem. So .. either * come up with a solution * raise the issue - for tagging problems the tagging mailing list should be best (note ‘should’). But to place a message on the wiki page implying ‘don’t use this’ when there is no alternative given is destructive to mappers and the wiki. |

| Ice Cream | Yes :) And if you want an entry then tag? entrance=* …. except if it is for parking then it is amenity=parking_entrance Most of this inconsistency is caused by the amenity tag preexisting osm.wiki/Tag:shop=, entrance= etc tags. Thus things were put under amenity= , were as today you and I would put them under other key tags. “The traditions of the dead generations weigh like a nightmare on the brains of the living” Karl Marx 1852 |

| Problem with routing | Hi again.. a further thought. If you try routing over a very small distance you may find the ‘barrier’ to the routing. Just a thought. …. It will take mapsme some time to update their maps so best to do as much to isolate the cause as possible. |
|
| What to do about Bus routes in Puebla? | If you simply delete the routes then you will loose the information of where the bus routes are. Any reason to suspect that the routes themselves are wrong? If your using JOSM you might be able to move/copy the routes to another layer thus you can have the information and correctly enter the data. |
