Why did I start with Lismore Heights?

I actually prefer tracing from GPS tracks, as I find the yahoo overlay can have some errors, especially on hilly terrain.

On some really hilly areas, I've wussed out and drove my car around - with a friend in the passenger seat taking photos of POIs as we go :)

Lack of MSIE 6.0 support impeding mapping progress

There's always Portable Firefox, so you can run it off a flash drive rather than having to install it.
I'm not sure if it'd comply with your IT departments usage policy, but here it is:

OpenStreetBugs is buggy in Firefox 3.5

oooh wow, http://openstreetbugs.org/ is much nicer to use :D *bookmarked*

emka: Thanks for the link, it works fine in FF 3.5 (32bit Linux, I'd assume other platforms would work nicely too).

By road and foot

Wow that should keep you occupied for a fair bit tracing in all your saved tracks.
It should make for a very nice contribution to OSM - thanks :)

OziExplorer

Hi Chris,

I haven't used Ozi Explorer before, but if I've read their website right, it looks like it can import garmin IMG maps:-
http://www.oziexplorer3.com/img2ozf/img2ozf.html

If this is the case, then you can grab openstreetmap maps that have been kindly converted into garmin IMG format here:-
osm.wiki/OSM_Map_On_Garmin/Download

Then using img2ozf you should be able to convert that into a map that Ozi Explorer can understand.

If you're using a laptop / pocket pc there may well be other alternatives that you could use to Ozi Explorer if this doesn't work.

Taking another chunk out of Maplint

Wow, that area is getting nicely detailed there now Biogenesis_ :)
Every contribution is much valued here, I dump the NSW open street maps on my GPS unit that I take with me where ever I go. - If I'm on a road that's not mapped, consider it mapped by the next day :)

I'll have to come up and visit Newcastle someday then.

Garmin eTrex

I just read your recommendations there Andy, I agree, the garmin etrex units are quite good.
I've got an etrex vista HCx myself, with an 8GB micro usb card in it.
Contrary to what you've said, it does work fine in there - as it'd be an SDHC card.
Mind you, I don't think I'd be able to fill it up far enough to warrant getting anything in excess of 128MB.
- So just a note that they can take SDHC cards, whether they can actually use it all is a different matter.

Ignis: using the garmin units to put in waypoints for POIs can be quite annoying and slow, I recommend taking a digital camera with you and using JOSM to edit openstreetmap.

- Have fun!

Mkgmap developments

Sounds easy enough to get going.
I'm running ubuntu here too.
It's good to have a GPS unit that'll display OSM data, that way you can easily work out what has and hasn't been mapped, without having to lug around a laptop / plan your trip in advance too much.

I've found the experimental routing a bit odd, in that it won't route down some major roads. - I'll have to investigate this further, as it may be that the road in question isn't joined up properly with other nodes / roads, or perhaps isn't tagged correctly.

If I do find a problem, and it's not known, then I'll let you know via the dev mailing list

Thanks :)

Mkgmap developments

Thanks :D
I've been using maps generously created by OSM Australia, now I'll use mkgmap and a few other scripts on my linux server to make my own garmin map files of my area.

It's a very nice app, I'll have some fun setting it up myself this weekend.

Railroad bridges

Good point there Marlow.
I've done lots of bridges, but have forgotten about the max height property.
Another thing to add to my list of things to remember when mapping :D

Pamela Fox of Google is talking about Map Maker right now

It'd be really great to eventually get google satellite / aerial maps for tracing.
Hopefully there'll be a good agreement with licensing for it.
The google aerial maps have a much finer resolution, which would be great for mapping finer details, and roads obfuscated by trees.

All street names added for Avondale Heights & Keilor East

Yeah, probably a bit far from your area BlueMM :P
and yeah, going down the hills here is great fun (unless you're trying to map them, oh my poor poor brakes on my bike will need to be changed soon).
It's great when you overtake cars on your bike in a 70 zone :D

All street names added for Avondale Heights & Keilor East

Nicely done there BlueMM :)
That area is looking nice and very complete.
Is there any chance you'll be visiting Macleod / Yallambie?

I've been busy mapping out parts of Templostowe, Lower Plenty, Eltham, Montmorency. Unfortunately for me these areas have rather difficult hills and POIs to map out on bike.

Anyway, good to see all those street names coming in over there.
Rhubarb.

More street name updates

A gate can be tagged on a node (on the road) with:
highway=gate
See here: osm.wiki/index.php/Tag:highway%3Dgate

London is huge! One person mapped most of it?! That's incredible :D

Something new...

JoeRichards,
Note this suggestion is incredibly impractical,
but you can grab older planet.osm from http://planet.openstreetmap.org/

Nice program there Gary68 :)

First update on mapping OpenStreetMap (long overdue)

Nicely done there blue,
I've been a bit shy using potlatch, mainly because I haven't used it that much.
I prefer cycling with my GPS unit, and a digital camera, then using JOSM to do the rest.
I do like entering lots of detail in, recently drinking fountains, toilets, post boxes and speed humps.

And yeah, OSM is quite addictive :D
Hopefully sometime soon all the melb suburbs will be completed, and all the nice details ... then I guess we'll move out to the more regional areas and map them too!

Woodlands Historic park, Melbourne, Australia

Yes, they've been uploaded, they will be rendered in mapnik ~ this thursday perhaps.
If you want to see my handy work now, press the blue "+" button on the right of the screen, and choose osmarender.

Woodlands Historic park, Melbourne, Australia

That'd be great getting the rougher mountain bike tracks for Westerfolds Park.
On Monday I cycled around the park and added in most of the car parks, toilets, and drinking fountains there.
Some day I'll map out the Bridge that goes across to Finn's Reserve, and probably more amenities around Westerfolds Park.

Need some help with Circular Roads

I'm not to sure about doing this with potlatch, but I know for sure this can be done in JOSM
osm.wiki/index.php/JOSM
In Australia here we also drive on the left hand side of the road, I've fixed up quite a few roundabouts with JOSM, it's quite easy to do once you spend a few hours learning JOSM.
