I think the most important factor here should be what the local OSM community wants. People from other countries (Poland, Ukraine, Russia, etc) shouldn't dictate the Belarusian community which language they use as their main mapping language. If they agreed to use Russian, this should be respected. And such issues shouldn't be resolved in a changeset discussion anyway.

Is this for real? Is there really a church?

Hello!
The names I added to the map were actually used on OSM for years and were changed only recently. The previous name:en in Transnistria all were a transcription of the Russian spelling (which is used on the ground in this region). Those transcriptions are also used by the local government. Wikipedia consistently uses the Romanian names of places in Transnistria, which are never used on signs locally. The Romanian names sometimes differ greatly from the Russian names, and only a minority of the population in Transnistria actually has knowledge of Romanian. A couple of days ago, a small amount of name:en tags were changed to a strange version of the Romanian names (missing diacritics). And again, those were only like 10 out of ~200 place names in Transnistria, while the rest of the name:en tags were still using the Russian transcription. So, to get consistency and to abide to the "on-the-ground" rule, I changed the names back to their previous form which was used on OSM for years. I hope this sounds reasonable to you.

Sorry, I was lazy and didn't addjust my edit comment. I was actually only adding the name of Abkhazia in the Adyghe language, which is closely related to Abkhaz and used to be spoken in the areas bordering Abkhazia.

What the hell? There is no American embassy in Transnistria. And even less so in Kamenka.

Danke.

When I removed them, they were still bearing the old name. I forgot to add the new name, I'm sorry.

Still, I don't know of any other country on OSM where such simplified spellings are used. Azerbaijan, Turkey, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Sweden, France - in all those countries diacriticals are used in the main name tag.

I was on vacation, sorry. But at least for the main rendering, the full and correct street names should be used. Would it be a solution to put the "pidginized" Turkmen names in another tag?
