Mapnik render modifications

I do not want to start one of those back to the old facebook campaigns, but I want to know if there is any chance that this mapnik render will go back to the old way. Since I am not sure of how to display the CloudMade tiles in openlayers, and since I do not like completely (probably more than an 80%) the way they render mapnik either, I guess I will have to find the way to make my own render with the "old" specs (I do not know how to use the CM tiles in OpenLayers and want to render my own mapnik, that is quite funny.

Mapnik render modifications

I am not convinced at all with the colors and the borders, and even though I am not a big fan of the CloudMade Mapnik render I am thinking of changing to it.

~ 20.000 nodes for Viluyskoe Reservoir

Dear Katpatuka,

Right now I am merging all the coastline traces that you created and changing the natural:coastline tag for a natural:water tag. I hope you don't mind that change and that it renders OK on Wednesday. We can see how it works in a short while in Osmarender (I will request a render for the area as soon as I finish merging the traces and changing the tag).

Excellent work by the way. Congratulations.

Cheers

House numbering patch: needs work

As you sure notice, many things are not rendered in the Mapnik render displayed at the homepage of OpenStreetMap.org (Supermarkets, Pharmacies, Fuel Stations, etc.). I do not think that is a problem, since so many things will make the map not useful or at least visually unatractive (and yes, that is an important thing).

The house numbering will be an excellent example of something that may visually overload the Mapnik render. I have not found any map that shows the numbering in a visual way. All the maps that have this kind of information respond to address queries, Georeferencing them.

Finally, the advantage with this project, is that you can always take the data and make a render the way you like it.

Cheers

House numbering patch: needs work

I am not sure if I am getting your idea the right way, but if the problem is the way the numbers are rendered in Osmarender (in those small circles), do not worry. The data of the numbers location is still there, so when an address georeference feature is developed (supposing it is not already done) all of us will be able to use it (In my opinion over a Mapnik render).

Eastern Island, New Jersey, and Cayman Island

It is really strange, but both Eastern Island and Cayman Island look fine in that coastline viewer, but both didn't render well during this weeks Mapnik render.

I really can't figure out what's wrong with them. A theory that I am considering right now, based on the observation of how often the renders include some changes that I have made in the past to the coastline around my area, is that coastline are not rendered (at least not completely) in every weeks Mapniks render.

I guess we will be able to see in next weeks mapnik render.

The Thames at Belvedere

Joe,

You have my "vote" for anything like that. A kind of Information Freeway/Tiles@Home but for the Mapnik render. That would be great.
Is there a technical reason not to do this?

Cayman Islands?

I merged all the Coastline traces together. I think that could help.
Anyway Osmarender looks alright so I guess someone already fixed this.

I am not sure if the changes will be rendered today or next week, then we will know if everything is alright.

GPS Traces not available - 403 forbidden error

Dear Stefan,

I don't know if the rest of the people can say the same, but talking at least for myself. I have get use to Potlach, It is so simple. On the other side, I have tried JOSM and Merkaartor, and neither of them is that simple to use.

Dear ammer4,

Patience. I have been using OSM for 5 months and haver have seen a problem like this. I guess is the price to pay for the exponential growth.

Dear BPfei,

The problem with Flash is that Adobe hasn't put enough effort in the Linux version of the software. I guess the only certain way to avoid this is to use JOSM, Merkaartor, or other "non-flash" software.

Lets wait till Monday, probably everything will be alright by then.

Best Regards,

Julio Costa

GPX Import failure

I recommend you to download any track from other user and check the differences between the sintaxis of that gpx file and the one that you are trying to upload. That is the way I figured out what was wrong with my gpx files when I started uploading tracks from the Navit log files (I edited them with some OpenOffice spreadsheets adding what was not there by default. Not efficient at all but it worked for me).

Now I am tracking with my BlackBerry (using bbTracker) and a Bluetooth external GPS. Much more efficient than taking my laptop with me :)

Torres del Paine

Congratulation for that work!

Other people and I have been working a lot lately to improve the amount of OSM mapped roads available in our country (Chile). Santiago and the Gran Valparaiso (the Urban Area in which I live) are growing at a very decent speed. Specially Santiago which has aerial images from Yahoo!(That makes a world of difference in terms of time spend on the road, fuel expenses, the speed of the drawing, etc.)

Well again I thank you very much for your work.

Cheers,

Getting Started

I read it :)

Please made a more intuitive Editor!

I think it is quite intuitive, I would like other features (an option to add an image as a layer and been able to align it for example) but that's another story.

Let's not repeat it!!

I like to walk but it would have take me years to map all this by feet. My city is essentially a hills city (most of the neighbourhoods around the downtown are hills). Also my GPS unit works way much better driving my car than walking with it in my pocket (I don't know why but it gets quite inaccurate when you are moving slowly).

Let's not repeat it!!

The lack of aerial images is not excuse for not mapping an area. There are not good images for my city (Viña del Mar, Chile and all the surrounding area), but I decided to start mapping it a couple of months ago.

I try to drive at least a couple of hours a couple of nights a week, and even though I have spent less than 100 pounds in gas during this period of time, I already have mapped most of the central area of my city, and some areas of the other cities that are part of this metropolitan city (Gran Valparaiso).

I know that the only way to make it grow faster is to get more people to work, so I decided to work in a Chilean (in spanish) website for OpenStreeMap to encourage other people to participate in the project (As far as I know, there are only three or four people working actively in the project in my country) probably I will release this website before the end of the month.

Hi, i'm new

About the satnav question you should check Navit (http://www.navit-project.org/) or Roadnav (http://roadnav.sourceforge.net/).

As far as I know the street numbers can not be included yet (is a feature that will require a lot of work on our user side, and that probably will be developed in the future).

I am using a Java based application with my BlackBerry (8100 Pearl + external GPS via Bluetooth), It is called bbtracker (http://www.bbtracker.org/), and I am not sure if it will work a Windows mobile device. Take a look at it to see if you can install it, if it doesn't work probably you will be able to find some software that works the same way.

Cheers

Traces Upload Limit

Richard,

Your recommendation message is there. That's a fast use of the users feedback :)

If your upload more than 5 files, the message recommends you to consider waiting till those are processed before uploading more. It is just a recommendation.

Traces Upload Limit

Thank you Richard. I did not noticed before that the Edit options was active as soon as you upload a trace (Quite strange I must say).

I agree with you about the message. But a weight measure will help too. How "heavy" can a reasonable file be? 1MB? 2MB? I think that people that want to work in other scales (like this guy from Romania) should use JOSM (I haven't learn to use it yet).

Traces Upload Limit

But we are still with a 12 hour lag and the Mapnik render for this week already processed :(
