Hello,
yesterday I published a new plugin for JOSM called "ElevationProfile" which shows the elevation profile of a GPS trace.
You can get it via the standard plugin install mechanisms within JOSM, it requires version 3094.

Some GPS devices provide this information - e. g. my WSG-1000 measures the altitude via pressure instead via satellite (requires calibration, but is much more accurate than the GPS elevation).
