Post When Comment
On Notes and Local Knowledge

@Friendly_Ghost - can you explain why? Because fixme tags are hidden away - you need to query for them, use a tool like Keepright, or notice them when editing - whereas notes can be viewed on osm.org and in apps like StreetComplete, meaning more people are likely to see a note asking for local knowledge than a fixme.

On Notes and Local Knowledge

These notes that require local knowledge may remain stale for a long period of time.

While an improved note system would be good, I don’t think that old notes are really such a big problem? I mean notes don’t affect the map data and so long as they are still open for a good reason then there’s no urgency to close them due to how old they are.

Some require new aerial imagery, others need a bit more info or even a visit which if they are closed no one would know about. I went on a long bike ride this summer and managed to resolve a few notes that needed a survey because I checked osm.org and noticed them.

Notes are also better than fixme tags which are not visible on the OSM website and they are highlighted in the likes of StreetComplete for example to people who are out and about.

Happy ODbL Planet Anniversary!

Your link doesn’t work either - should’ve checked dev tools first, the console gives a cert error for those tiles, e.g. https://tile.osmz.ru/old/11/572/746.png

@Zverik - the 2008 map doesn’t load in that 4 map page for me?

OpenAedMap.org initiative.

Would be good if AEDs could be rendered on osm-carto as well…

State of the Map 2022 "talk to me" (or not) pin-back buttons :)

Only issue is for those who are colourblind trying to work out what each one means at a distance without reading the access text…

Identifying and adding missing pedestrian accessways in Auckland

I’ve done a similar thing in iD - turn off everything except traffic/service roads and paths in the map data, load up Strava’s heatmap as a custom layer and then have a look around to see if there’s “heat” which might indicate a path that’s not already mapped.

Would be really useful if the OSM highway data could be compared with Strava’s heatmap to identify these so these could be loaded into a maproulette task or something for people to check.

Golf course details now rendered with the latest Carto release

Could you not change the golf=green colour to the old golf course colour - rgb(181 227 181) - which would be less blue and more green?

What is the best map background to use for adding things to the map?

Unless you plan on changing everything in one area, the best imagery is that which matches everything else nearby. :)

In the UK - Bing has been updated with newer imagery, but in many places it is out of alignment with the current data, Esri clarity (old Bing) and OSSV.

PRoW Mapping in Lancashire

There’s also Strava’s heatmap which might be useful to check for any well used paths not in OSM or whether the PROWs are being followed on the ground.

Or use the custom layer: https://anygis.ru/api/v1/Tracks_Strava_All/{x}/{y}/{z}

Vespucci News December 2020

@SimonPoole

You’ll be pleased to know that it seems like there won’t be any issues come January or September: https://letsencrypt.org/2020/12/21/extending-android-compatibility.html

Vespucci News December 2020

That’s the first time I’ve read about the changes to Let’s Encrypt - wow, seems there’s going to be a lot of broken websites for a lot of people…

Entering buildings REALLY quickly in JOSM, and how to make them ready for streetcomplete housenumber tagging

Changing multiple addresses. Perhaps it is obvious but other editors (iD) can’t do it, so it is worth mentioning with jOSM we can edit multiple objects at once.

This is incorrect, iD can now edit tags in multiple objects which are selected.

New hyper-detailed garden fence mapping in London

Edinburgh’s level of detail comes from having excellent out of copyright OS maps available to trace from, along with some good surveying. Most places don’t have that combination so there’s not that kind of detail mapped on a city scale, just in smaller pockets carried out by enthusiastic mappers.

Fortunately we now have better quality Bing imagery to help with that kind of detailed mapping. However, the issue is that it seems to be slightly misaligned with the old Bing imagery (which I think is now used for the ESRI clarity imagery layer). So that might cause a problem if mappers don’t correct the alignment before making changes!

The Long Trek to Fixing Florida

Sorry, not sure I understand - what do you mean “since primarys randomly change”?

The trunk road in my first link has the same tags as the primary road either side of it and also looks the same on Bing. So I’m wondering why it would be trunk - especially as I’d say the whole point is to create a motorway-trunk-primary hierarchy in the road network.

The Long Trek to Fixing Florida

I’m not really familiar with the US road system but from UK experience I would expect to see a coherent motorway and trunk network.

Just looking at Florida I found a few examples where trunk roads are orphaned from other trunk or motorways, from: https://overpass-turbo.eu/s/VlC

way/83775365 way/53738099 way/555069787

There’s also a few leftover trunk_link roads which you can find via http://osmose.openstreetmap.fr/en/map/?#zoom=10&lat=28.343&lon=-81.277&item=1110&level=1%2C2%2C3&tags=&fixable=

Mapping addresses helped find a nine year old mistake in OpenStreetMap (also in Apple Maps, HERE, and TomTom)

While out collecting addresses I’ve also found other useful things to map including:

Another thing that is good to map after surveying is speed limits - I notice none of the residential streets in the area you surveyed have a maxspeed tag :)

Asda stores county wide

The nearest Debenhams and M&S to me didn’t sell furniture before they closed either, but they would be classed as department stores. Asda Living’s tagline is “Clothing Home Entertainment” so that basically covers everything non-food related that a department store would sell?

At least it’s a better tag than the previous one of shop=houseware which is too narrow to cover Asda Living.

Asda stores county wide

Just to let you know I’ve gone through each Asda Living object and changed them to shop=department_store changeset/84986153

Asda stores county wide

@CjMalone Wasn’t having a go at you :) Just pointing out that the usage of houseware v department_store was more equal than the initial stats showed.

Not really sure about the petrol station situation, think I’d need to have a look at more examples in OSM and real life. This might be something to bring up on the talk-gb mailing list.
