Asda stores county wide

The wiki page for houseware says “A shop that focuses on small items, like cutlery, crockery, cookware and decorative items.” shop=houseware

So I think it would be a mistake to use that tag, given they also sell clothes, electrical items, etc. They don’t sell food so it can’t be a supermarket, and neither are they a variety_store. Maybe not the same as traditional department_store, but it’s the best tag IMO. shop=department_store

I did notice three of the Asda Living stores you edited were previously tagged as a department_store, including this one: way/263697069/history

Another had no shop tag at all. Two were also changed from “household” but that’s not really a synonym: way/139845207/history

Generally if the Bing imagery is very clear and the same as the ESRI (clarity) background, then those two will be from around 2012. Most of the ESRI or Maxar imagery I’ve seen is more recent, along with the updated but lesser quality Bing imagery, some even from 2018 or 2019.

You can usually work out from various areas of stages of construction areas and new developments which is newer, though if in doubt add a note to the map.

Also bear in mind that ESRI or Maxar is usually slightly out of alignment with Bing so needs to be offset before editing.

Don’t know about JOSM but in the iD editor you can do Ctrl + Shift + B and it shows a box with the imagery date, though this only works for the two ESRI sources.

Regarding Asda Living stores - a search for https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:shop and name="Asda Living" in uk finds 30 objects, however there are some differing values for shop. Houseware x20, department_store x7, furntiture x2, clothes x1 - so these should be standardised.

I’m in Scotland where we seem to only have one Asda Living store so haven’t visited one, but from the descriptions online it seems to be their non-food range - perhaps the wider ranging department_store is more appropriate than houseware?

Just had a quick look at your notes - for 2 and 4 there seems to be a petrol station visible on the more recent ESRI or Maxar imagery (always a good idea to check these when mapping).

Making maps of `sport` tags in OpenStreetMap in Ireland & Britain

The golf hotspot around Inverness seems to be because of three golf courses with every tee, fairway, green and bunker tagged with sport=golf - that’s 1/4 of all those tags in Scotland :) https://overpass-turbo.eu/s/Try

Taking advantage of recent school closures

There’s about 368 objects with “(“ in their phone value in the UK: https://overpass-turbo.eu/s/RYf

I’ve seen some people correct phone number formats before, so it might be cleaned up eventually - I’ve edited some of the ones near me.

Taking advantage of recent school closures

@CjMalone - OSM data is indexed by search engines, I’ve found osm objects appearing in google search result

@alexkemp You might want to fix the phone number value in way/23367543 - the (0) should not be used, see the wiki.

How I map race tracks

There’s some good examples in Europe for you, like Silverstone: osm.org/#map=15/52.0705/-1.0175 and Spa-Francorrchamps: osm.org/#map=15/50.4374/5.9720

I’d suggest amenity=parking should probably be kept for the (public) parking areas - I’ve seen highway=service with area=yes used for the paddock areas instead. For example: osm.org/#map=15/53.1773/-2.6127

There’s an issue open on the osm-carto github regarding the rendering of raceways: https://github.com/gravitystorm/openstreetmap-carto/issues/3852

Updates on image correction.

Not really, I use the Strava heatmap as a custom background layer in iD and switch between the layers (ctrl + B). Much quicker than opening JOSM.

Updates on image correction.

There’s also Strava heatmap imagery which is more likely to be there than OSM user traces.

Brands - Buzz Bingo suggestion

I think it would be best if you posted this on the Name Suggestion Index’s github

https://github.com/osmlab/name-suggestion-index/issues

Even with just the information you’ve posted here someone might be able to add it to the NSI for you.

Though at the moment there’s only 9 instances of amenity=gambling names containing the word Buzz in the UK. Probably some other bingo hall brands are more popular.

Please don’t post 78MB worth of imagery in a diary post…

Help required for adding access information to track roads

I think there are two distinct categories of service/track roads in this discussion. As mentioned previously, dead end roads/tracks can usually be accessed by delivery drivers even if there’s a private sign. Though even if there is no road mapped, or it is tagged private - routers for delivery drivers should be able direct them to the closest point on the main road.

In cases where the tracks connect two roads, I would suggest an OSM note could be opened at the location if you don’t have enough information to remotely map access restrictions or other details, so local mappers can help.

And in your example of the connecting track “Williams Road”, looking at imagery and Mapillary/OpenStreetCam for that location shows some blocks placed to prevent access at one end, presumably you don’t have GPS data going along the whole track?

Disputed boundary tagging sprint (2019-03)

Thanks for the work you’ve put into the post, however can I suggest that in future you use different colours than green and red together so that your graphics are accessible to colourblind users?

OSM not loading properly / adding art in architecture

Hi, can I suggest you take a screenshot of the problem, upload it to imgur.com or similar and post it here?

Einstellung des favorisierten Editors

Fakt ist das sich der Maintainer von iD nicht an die Gepflogenheiten von OSM hält und sich einen Dreck, um Hinweise und Verbesserungsvorschläge schert.

The fact is that the maintainer of iD does not stick to the practices of OSM and give a shit, to give hints and suggestions for improvement.

Zum Beispiel / For example?

I-285 NOT a tunnel where the Hartsfield-Jackson runway bridge goes over

The bridge article warns against using both bridge and tunnel tags to describe the situation and it’s absolutely more of a bridge situation than it is a tunnel situation.

At the moment the runway is a bridge as well as the road below being a tunnel - so one of them needs to be changed.

Service Area

I wonder if perhaps changing to landuse=services would be a better tag for this, to avoid confusion with “service”? Or highway=motorway_services (similar to the motorway_junction tag).

Also, you can use the share option in overpass-turbo to fill in the query for others :) https://overpass-turbo.eu/s/FmT

  • When it’s cheaper than other maps?
  • When it shows things that other maps don’t, like paths or new roads?
  • When it allows somebody to quickly fix an error on the map?
  • When it allow people to create a better map of their local area?
How much is too much?

I was expecting something really busy but that area is far from being too much, it’s mainly just walls and driveways along with the buildings. :)

Have a look at somewhere like Edinburgh, with walls/fences, gardens, trees, buildings, addresses: osm.org/#map=17/55.95668/-3.20493 or Kelso where someone has added areas covering every piece of tarmac: osm.org/#map=17/55.59851/-2.43446

Although, my only concern about really detailed places is that other nearby places may get neglected (especially if it’s just one mapper) - more people would benefit from two decently mapped places than having one poor and one well mapped.

Take a right on “Too Damn Far Rd”

I don’t want to discourage your useful work, however I would say that in this case “The Shit” might be a valid name. :-)

It seems to be part of a mountain bike trail in a large forest, and there’s various other names that could be termed as low quality. E.g. “Meth Lab”, “Unemployment Line”, “Ewok Village” etc. In fact, it appears on this map - http://www.galbraithmt.com/paid/trails/evolution.html - so I’d say it should be kept on the OSM map.
