I of course will also add my gpx tracks of Cornwall and will correct all mistakes and missing things I can remember. But as this was not a OSM holiday (as long as OSM doesn't pay for it and gives me more free days it will never be), I don't have much of data. I usually don't take pictures of street name signs while on holiday.

It's still to complicated to make quality edits for the masses. But maybe smart phones (off which I own none) will come to the rescue quite soon. The two tier editing process (first collect data in the wild, then edit later) is a show stopper for most casual users. Especially the second part. For me it's the other way around. Collecting data is the more time consuming and tedious part.

On why Germans seem to be more attracted to OSM? Well I have my theories, but that's probably material for one or two theses for some social scientists. Maybe in Cornwall the pride of heritage can be used as a leverage to get more people to map? Tourists are not useful for this purpose. At least not enough.

Das ist eine Frage der Sichtweise. Gerade in Staedten haben oft einfach viele GPS Geraete die gleichen Reflektions- und Abschattungsprobleme, was zu einer verzerrten Karte fuehrt. Satellitenbilder lassen sich davon nicht beeindrucken, die haben hoechstens einen generellen Offset.

Beispiel dazu: Auf Grund von Reflexion zeichnet mein GPS immer eine in Wirklichkeit schnurgerade Strasse als Kurve auf, weil sie an einem einzelnen, grossen Gebaeude vorbeifuehrt. Tracks von anderen GPS Geraeten zeigen dasselbe verhalten.

Ich bin allerdings auch dafuer, eher die GPS Daten zu benutzen, da einfach die Benutzer der Karten auch oft GPS Empfaenger benutzen und der Fehler sich in der Anwendung damit herausnegiert. Oder uebersehe ich wichtige Nutzungsarten, bei denen die unverzerrte Abbildung essentiell ist?

Was sagt die Wikipedia zur geplanten Startzeit von Galileo? Rechnen wir sicherheitshalber das doppelte, besser das dreifache. Bereits jetzt sind sie hoffnungslos hinter dem Zeitplan und haben alle Jahre wieder grobe Finanzierungsproblemme.

Wegen ungelegter Eier ein so tolles und vorallem bereits praktisch nutzbares Projekt wie OSM einfrieren? Ich waere dagegen.

Uebrigens: Auch GPS mit EGNOS liegt im 2m Bereich. Gerade wurde der erste Ersatz-GPS-Satellit ins All befoerdert. In den naechsten 10 Jahren sollen alle alten ersetzt sein. Die neue Generation soll bis zu 300% genauer sein und uaf jeden Fall mit mehr Sendeleistung fuer bessere Abdeckung sorgen.

Besides the pure 3D data (which essentially is just vector data), there will be texture data which probably takes up quite an amount of disc space and therefore bandwidth. I don't know if and how a donation-funded organisation as OSM can handle this.

The needed metadata is minimal. Google stores the coordinates as 3D, but usually leaves the z axis at zero and just ticks a 'at ground level' property. The scale conversion would need to be done in the viewing application. The 3D data usually contains scale information for that. Google adds some camera position and tilt/yawn information, but that's optional.

But there is another problem: "Without Google’s prior written authorization, you may not use or distribute a Photo Textures Model in a mapping or geographic application or service (other than a Google Service)" In context this probably only applies to photo textures created with street view imagery, but followed to the letter this means you can't use models in OSM.

Also kann dein Programm Karten herunterladen? Wo ist dann das Problem?

Das Speichern der Karten in .jpg, .png usw. bringt dir nichts. Das sind 'Bilder' der Karten, also eine einfache Abbildung die keine Informationen enthaelt. Fuer Routing u.ae. brauchst du die echten Kartendaten (Was ist eine Strasse, was ein Weg, was eine Kreuzung usw.)

Was dir an der Reit- und Wanderkarte gefaellt ist sicher die Darstellung und die Routingfunktion. Beides wird aber nur durch spezielle Anpassungen auf das Anzeigegeraet erreicht (also z.B. die Karte im Web oder die Karte fuer Garmin GPS Geraete). Wenn es keine spezielle Version fuer dein Geraet/Format gibt wirst du wohl nicht in den Genuss dieser Annehmlichkeiten kommen koennen.

Die Kartendaten im Hintergrund sind aber die selben wie bei allen anderen OSM Karten auch. Und dafuer (also ohne spezielle Darstellung) gibt es sicherlich Programme zur Umwandlung in dein Datenformat oder sogar fertige Karten.

Allerdings scheinst du so eine Karte ja schon zu besitzen. Ein Spezielles Programm kann ich dir leider auch nicht nennen.

Merke: Die Kartenrohdaten haben kein "Aussehen". Es gibt nur eine Datenbank die sie enthaelt, alle Karten bauen darauf auf. Es gibt Programme die diese Daten fuer verschiedene Geraete/Formate umrechnen. Das Aussehen der Karte (und der Funktionsumfang) muss fuer jedes Geraet einzeln angepasst werden. Die Umwandlungsprogramme koennen entweder eine Standardvariante erstellen oder mit zusaetzlichen Dateien angepasst werden. Das "Aussehen" von einem Geraet/Format in ein anderes zu wandeln ist meist nicht moeglich.

Do you have a site where you explain the whole concept or the goal you are aiming at?

For now all I can see is that you link portions of an image to (existing) objects in osm. (By using inkscape and josm). But what's your workflow to ultimatly create map data from the image? Shouldn't it be the other way around? Creating new osm objects for parts of the image?

You see I don't quite understand what you are doing, but I'm very interested to find out.

Versuch mal eine Karte mit dem JOSM Plugin herunterzuladen. Das hat zumindest bei mir schonmal eine höhere Auflösung als die jpgs die man von der Webseite bekommt.

Der 'Bonus' der Webseite ist ja auch weniger das Anbieten von jpgs, sondern die Geocodierung. Das man eben mit wenigen Klicks eine perfekt ausgerichtete Skizze in JOSM hat.

Meine Scans kann sowieso kein anderer verwenden, meine Handschrift hat eine eingebauten Kopier- bzw. Leseschutz.

Also alte daten kann man sicher migrieren. Sooo viel gibts ja eh nicht, also durchaus auch von hand. Das groessere Problem duerfte die Akzeptanz sein. Die ist eh schon..nunja...eher gering.

Wie schon gesagt: zum Auffinden von Fehlern voellig in Ordnung. Nur die Daten fuer die Verbesserung muessen aus der Beobachtung kommen.

Beispiel: Das Einbahnstrassenschild an der Strasse, nicht der Einbahnstrassenpfeil im Referenznavi (der koennte ja auch mal falsch sein).

Ich denke ueberigens das das eine der groessten Gefahren bei der weiteren Verbreitung von OSM ist. Das Kartenmaterial wird schnell von vielen genutzt, die Philosophie und das (rechtliche) Verstaendnis der Lizenz breitet sich aber weitaus langsamer aus. Solange OpenStreetBugs als 'Filter' dazwischenliegt ist es nicht so schlimm, wenn Leute ploetzlich Sachen bei Google Maps oder in ihrem Navi nachschlagen. Der eigentliche Edit erfolgt ja dann auf Basis anderweitig recherchierter Daten. Wenn die Leute aber alle erstmal den direkten Edit Knopf bei OSM endeckt haben....

Hab letztens erst eine Umfrage gehoert, wo leute mal wild mit dem Begriff Open Source konfrontiert wurden. Der gemeinsame Nenner war, dass das kostenlos ist. Aber von Freeware (die ganzen Google Tools) bis Trailversionen (mein 'Open'office ging nach 60 Tagen nicht mehr) war alles dabei. Von Quelloffenheit redete keiner. Von Lizenzen schon garnicht.

Bitte benutze zum Korrigieren von OSM nicht dein normales Navi. Das ist leider keine erlaubte Quelle.

Das 'Auffinden von Bereichen ohne Daten' ist zwar nach allgmeiner Ansicht Fair Use, das nutzen der Informationen zur Verbesserung von OSM aber nicht. Also am besten nur korrigieren, was du auch auf der Strasse siehst.

Stoebere doch ein bischen im Wiki, dort findest du viele Anregungen, wie du OSM helfen und die Karte verbessern kannst. Vom einfachen Markieren von Fehlern mittel OpenStreetBugs, dem schnellen Korrigieren von Daten mit dem Potlatch Online-Editor, dem Nachzeichnen von Satellitenbildern bis zum Aufzeichnen eigener GPS Daten und dem Hinzufuegen mittels JOSM.

Bitte informier dich auch im Wiki ueber die erlaubten Datenquellen. Bitte nicht von Google Maps abzeichenen usw..

Well I smell legal trouble with this kind of reasoning.
They opted in to be in the phone book, not to be on OSM.

To conclude a certain mindset from this is, well, brave.

Of course the data in the phone book is PRACTICALLY public, but so is Google Maps, Flickr, Myspace, Facebook, even TV. And you wouldn't dare to believe a movie is 'public' because it showed on TV last night.

I think I'm going with the 'has sign towards the street' thing. It's more in line with the 'as the street name reads on the sign' thing osm does with the maps.
