If you are talking about a JAVA / MIDP application, I'm definitely interestend in getting a copy. If it's some kind of native application, I won't be able to use it.

Fixing the Harz - again...

My previous post was about osmarender. And now some other (more or less) interesting details about mapnik:

Mapnik

  • does not show any forests/woods at zoom levels 1..8

  • shows all but the harz at level 9 with the same color

  • shows them all, including the harzfor level 10..17, but they have different shades of green there.

Orphan nodes?

The screenshot looks as if those nodes would form a proper way if they were on a way. A friend of mine had the same issue with some coastline he mapped: There was a proper way, then someone (or something?) came along, removed the way but leaved the nodes.

If this is a major phenomenon in your area, and if it looks like there was some data that is now lost, it should be possible for some admin-like user to revert the old data.

I guess this is a rather complex procedure and is inappropriete if it concerns only one or two highways.

Fixing the Harz - again...

Well, right now it is not shown for level 1..11.

Levels 12..17 are fine. Right after my fix, i requested a rendering for every zoom 12 tileset, and it worked, and I also rendered some level 8 tilesets and uploaded them, they were also fine.

Some days later, they were replaced with wood-less tilesets. I guess someone changed the rendering rules so that woods shall not be drawn any more for lowzoom tiles. Several smaller woods are now invisible, too.

After I all, i would say this is a whole new problem and has nothing to do with the original "bug".

Map with individual POI icons available

Hey, another great improvement! Stills needs a lot of work until it is really useful, but this is definitely the way to go.

If I press the "back to menu" button, the POI logic stops to work, e.g. if I move the map, the symbols are not reloaded. I think the logic should continue to work, no matter if the user currently looks at the selection menu.

I guess it would be rather easy to display more information (e.g. the name and maybe other tags) in a tooltip if the user hovers over an icon. This would be a real advantage over the classical POI display inside the tiles.

Or maybe you display the icons in small scale (8 pixel) without text, and let them grow when the mouse cursor gets near them.

Fixing the Harz - again...

Ok then, I think that's it. This time I really fixed it and we just have to wait for all tiles to re-render. They are already in the queue. It's still the dirty old hack from the first try, slightly improved, but hey, who cares?

Fixing the Harz - again...

Yippie! Now it works, mostly.

Two white suqares remain, one of them is still rendering. The last white square is Clausthal-Zellerfeld. It's a tricky multipolygon thing. I guess I'm nout guilty for that, since I did not touch it, only added a new polygon... but anyway, I'll try to fix it.

Next problem are the cuts. During my previous try, the cuts appeared as 1 or 2 pixel white line. Now I made some efforts to make them 0 pixel wide, and they are much wider than ever. Currently working on it...

Emergency Yahoo! Aerial Image tracing

Well, if we now are allowed to use Yahoo!, can they really forbid it in future? Of course, they can make the access to it impossible for us. Since the high resolution images cover only few areas, could we make a simple copy of the images, tracing them later? Or the question might be: Are we allowed to do this? Still got 95 GB free memory on my hard disk :)

New Potlatch!

Just wanted to say that this is really great. I refused to use Patlatch until now, because it looked rediculus on my 1920x1200 screen. Now it's pretty nice. Did't test it in London at level 12 yet :)

Btw, I wished that more web developers would make their flash apps scale with the screen size. It can't be too difficult, is it?

Fixed the Harz

Ok, the image is back. But now I realized that I did not fix the Harz, I broke it! There are about as much white squares as before. Sorry for this! I will try to fix this (again) when I find time...

Fixed the Harz

There used to be an image in my comment I wrote 16:08:05. Now it's gone. Seems like I was the first one to use an img tag and will also be the last one :(

Fixed the Harz

@daveemtb: Sounds lika a good idea. Anyway, I did not want to have multiple parts. Don't know why I wanted this, must have had my reasons :)

I will now wait until some of these tiles are re-rendered (already requested it, but seems to take some time...). If my solution won't work, I will try yours.

Fixed the Harz

Oops... this has fixed the problem for most tiles, but now there are other tiles which become white...

Especially good news is that it works for Clausthal-Zellerfeld, a city in the middle of the Harz. The city area is marked to be a hole in the wood, using a multipolygon relation. I feared that this complex thing would interfere with the self-intersecting Harz, but it worked well. Until then, it was rendered partly incorrect.

Fixed the Harz

Ok... so there seems to be some interest in how to do this... I assume that everyone who is interested has the possibility to start JOSM.

Take this adress to download a bounding box into JOSM: osm.org/?lat=51.83102&lon=10.86181&zoom=16&layers=0BFT

It should look like this:

You will get two object, a node called Benzingerode and the big Harz. You will see some cuts small cuts going through the wood. If you zoom in, you will notice that these cuts have a "negative width", because the shape is self-intersecting. Never versions of JOSM will show the wood as a filled green area and those cuts will be background color, what means black for most of you.

Osmarender seems to handle the cuts different, not showing them at all. I hope this won't break the mapnik layer!

I have installed the slippymap plugin. It shows me where the boundarys of zoom level 12 are located, and I made shure that my cuts are aligned so that every level 12 tile intersets with eiter the real outline or a cut.

Galeria Dominikańska

Well, it looks interesting, but is hard to understand what is going on if you don't know the place. Is this parking on top of a building? If yes, you should put the outline of that building into the map to make things clear.

But sometimes there are strange things, like the Altstadtkreisel in Wernigerode. If you don't knwo it, it will look very chaotic, but it closely resambles the reality.

OpenStreetMapping on an iPod Touch

If you had an older iPod, you could install linux on your iPod, which will not work on the iPod touch. But I heard that you could install software made for the iPhone on your iPod... don't know if anyone is developing OSM editor software for the iPhone. Or you simply try taking audio notes.

Armidale gets its creek

Hi!

I've got the same problem with rivers and streams. You may use the width or estimated-width tag to insert correct data. The width doesn't get into the rendering yet, but maybe we're lucky and some day we will be able to see those creeks as they should look...

Map Data

Sounds like a nice data source. Are you sure that it is legal to use this data? By the way, the link that you provided does not work :(

Something about mapping hardware

Seems as if the comment feature is new. I just wanted to test it on my own entry before I start using it seriously.
