Feel free to try Organic Maps as well, which also uses OSM map data.

Basic features like search and navigation works quite well. It does not support all complex features like OSMAnd, but exactly because of that it is a great candidate to recommend it to all non-techie friends and relatives.

@MalMrav

Someone must have only read the headlines, right? :)

Thanks for the tip. But “non-techie” is pretty much the exact opposite of me. Well, some of that is only in part 2 or will follow in further parts, but here’s a brief summary of me: - Computers since the Sinclair ZX-81 - In the Windows universe since DOS 3, Windows 2.11 - In the Linux universe since SuSE 4 - I’ve been working with maps with QGIS and R for several years

So, thanks again for the tip. But OSMand Pro is exactly the right thing for me !

Great story, thanks for sharing your experience! OSM is the power of being able to solve problems yourself, and that’s priceless (and map territories where the big companies have no commercial interest, but that’s another story 😉)!
