You can edit your old diary entries, maybe even the whole text.

NEW TO OPEN STREET MAP EDIT

Your area is just covered by satellite images, not by aerial ímages, like 90% of world surface. Satellite images are just visible in the lowest zoom level.

With JOSM, you can use other aerial images as backgrund for tracing.

Dear Nancy,

we always appreciate the help of local mappers, especially in the US, because our map is based on misaligned government data (TIGER). User bryantw from Mount Vernon has moved the TIGER mess to the right place.

You are welcome to cut any street if necessary:

The Potlatch Primer is a very good introduction for beginners.

landuse=residential in Haan

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Village_green

osm.org/?lat=51.49609&lon=7.47727&zoom=15&layers=B000FTF

Für einfache Rasenflächen ist landuse=village_green besser geeignet.
osm.org/?lat=51.50035&lon=7.41877&zoom=17&layers=B000FTF

Resignation in protest

On the one hand, I can completely understand your anger about a licence which was declared by some experts and which is difficult to understand. You may declare all YOUR edits as public domain like many other editors have done it before, so nobody can create a COPYRIGHT on them.

On the other hand, it doen't make sense to remove a very small part of the worldwide map. That is rather a damage for local residents and friends than for the OSM Foundation in London. Your parts of Tennessee River have been deleted and merged with other parts of Tennessee River, so they are not your unique edits any more. We are not removing parts of the map in order to tease the OSM foundation (as they would not even recognize it), but we are creating maps in order to show that independent mappers can do better.

Rendering problems

The rendering process starts if there are enough new points within this area.
There are tricks to accelerate the rendering process:

Mapnik:
Select the tile number (image URL), e.g. http://c.tile.openstreetmap.org/14/2655/6369.png and add /dirty to the URL:
http://c.tile.openstreetmap.org/14/2655/6369.png/dirty

Osmarender:
Go to http://www.informationfreeway.org/, Zoom level 12 and press R on the appropriate tile.
Osmarender assigns rendering to many computers in the whole world so it may take one or two days if your rendering process is assigned to an third-world server.

Route erstellen ????

Geo Game

This manual needs extension:

You have to move the map to the capital and than zoom in ...
... UNTIL YOU REACH ZOOM LEVEL 11.

Geo Game

It's a lame game which still needs a lot of action.

It was easy to find Tokyo on the map, but it was impossible to turn to the second city.

University campus/buildings?

> Should buildings be traced as areas or marked as points of interest?

If possible, they should be marked as areas (building=yes, name=XYZ).
Points are just for lazy people.

> What about the campus as a whole?

Should be marked as area (amenity=university, name=AAU).

> What about universities in urban areas where there may not be a distinct campus, just buildings sprinkled around in an area?

Should be marked as building (amenity=university, building=yes, name=XYZ).

osm.org/?lat=48.14804&lon=11.57291&zoom=17&layers=B000FTF
The department of mathematics is a single building two blocks away from the university.

If one department is big enough to cover a little area, it my get its own little campus:
osm.org/?lat=52.38477&lon=9.7189&zoom=17&layers=B000FTF

> What tags are suggested to identify a university building?

amenity=university, building=yes, name=XYZ

> Should the tags indicate what specific academic and/or administrative department(s) reside in the building?

Academic departments are often moving, so it makes sense to use the name of the building (e.g. N1)

osm.org/?lat=48.15038&lon=11.56847&zoom=17&layers=B000FTF

Fast food amenities should be tagged separately.

> If there are conventions being used out there, please add them to the wiki page!

Sorry, we are rather looking for good examples than reading conventions. It's your turn to describe how a good example looks like.

We don't follow simple instructions, we compete to create best solutions ;-)

Cycle routes versus tracks.

Look at osm.wiki/Potlatch/Primer

Cycle routes versus tracks.

Congratulations on understanding the intention of relations!

A relation indicates a route that connects many ways, e.g. a bus route. One street (e.g. Main Street) can have many bus routes and one bus route can pass through many streets. So it is a good idea to create one relation for each bus route.

It is hard to create a route because you have to type ALL properties MANUALLY:
type = route
route = bus OR road OR bicycle OR scenic
ref = number
network = lcn (IF bicycle) or bus company (e.g. MTA)
name = makes it easier to find it again

If a relation is already created once, you can ADD new ways to it in the area where it ends by clicking the ==(four lines)Button on the right side of Potlatch and selecting the appropriate relation. Potlatch, the online editor, has a maximum limit of 24 relations, so you have to zoom in if there are more than 24 relations in one area.

As relations are the best way to show a bike route, I was able to delete the ways that are converted GPX tracks. By pressing the G button, you can see if the GPX tracks are still available, if not, you may upload them again.

We are depending on local knowledge and we appreciate every help because it is easier to clean up technical mistakes than to collect local data.

Thank you for your hard work on a bicycle cruising suburban streets in the hot South in order to improve OSM!

Organisation - let's make it happen!

This project is completely decentral: First come, first map

In Germany, there is an incomplete and voluntary statistics how many streets are already mapped:

http://osm.gt.owl.de/Strassenliste/

Currently, big cities are well mapped, but small towns and villages still need attention:

http://osm.gt.owl.de/Strassenliste/map-nordrhein-westfalen.html
http://osm.gt.owl.de/Strassenliste/images/sachsen.jpg

Where do you live? If you (or your parents or your grandparents) live (at least temporarily) in a small village, you have a good chance to find a white place to map.

Roads

Right! At least in New York!

However, each state has its own system. In some states, like North Carolina and Virginia, State highways also include the lowest level of rural road network, which are designated as tertiary, whereas other states, like Minnesota and Wisconsin, have County highways of high importance, which are designated as secondary.

Rostock Lichtenhagen (Kalverad)
