| Just Getting Started - need guidance | Dear HCA_SRMC, you may trace a map if the map publisher _agrees_ to copy it. Maps from federal government agencies may be copied without special consent. However, states and local agencies have very different ideas about copyright on their map. Let's simply assume that the map publisher (whoever it is) explicitly agrees to copy the map. Technically, JOSM is a good solution for tracing images. jpg preserves the original colors, but is not very accurate on a high zoom level. gif and png are better suited for accurate mapping. JOSM requires to switch permanently between different modes (editing, drawing, deleting, moving and zooming buttons on the left side) which are difficult to understand for newbies. If you want to use JOSM, read the manual twice very carefully and try to start with simple edits. Uploading GPX traces is far more easy. OSM only accepts GPX traces, so you may need to convert GPX waypoints, KML, NMEA and XXX tracks to GPX tracks with a separate program like GPSBabel. Once you have uploaded your GPX track, you can see it by pressing the G button. Try to draw a new, straight line along the rough GPX track. GPX tracks between skyscrapers are usually bad, so it's good to avoid tracing between high buildings. Please keep in mind that secondary and tertiary are intended for major routes as mentioned in the functional map classification:

| Anfänger | Willkommen in unserem Projekt!

| Leaving Oklahoma, and a question about mapping autonomous regions | I agree that equating Indians with wildlife is condescending. If we just take the claimed level of sovereignty, an Indian nation would be tagged with admin_level=3 on an equal level like Hong Kong, Puerto Rico, Samoa and the Virgin Islands. However, Hong Kong passports are internationally recognized whereas tribal passports are not. Puerto Rico and Samoa are internationally recognized territories, e.g. at the Olympic games. Let's have a look at Wikipedia:
> While every reservation is part of a state, and residents vote as residents of the state in which they reside and do pay federal taxes, the reservations are exempt from many state and local laws.
> The ambiguous nature of their status has created both opportunities (such as gambling in states that normally disallow it) and challenges (such as the unwillingness of some companies to open up shop in a territory where they are not certain what laws will apply to them). So Indian reservations are a special rights zone with some specific privileges (e.g. lower taxes) and some specific disadvantages (see example above). Indian reservations can be compared with European tax-free zones (e.g. the villages of Jungholz, Livigno, Samnaun). These tax-free villages have ordinary administrative boundaries with admin_level=8 despite the fact that their municipal border is a border of national taxation.
I know that tax exemption is not the unique property of an Indian reservation.

| Leaving Oklahoma, and a question about mapping autonomous regions | Using boundary=administrative for Indian reservations is a joke, because they are often part of other municipalities. Look at the city of Cloquet, for example:
The western part of the city is covered by Fond du Lac Indian Reservation. However, the reservation does not constitute a separate municipality like Scanlon on the southeastern edge. Why don't they try to create a separate municipality or even a separate county? Reservations are areas with some special rights concerning some topics which cannot be described by the transitive (1>2>9>10) and hierarchical admin_level tag. However, they don't fulfill all duties of an administrative entity like a county or a state. Administrative division in the United States is a complicated matter as many countries and municipalities don't fit with urban settlements. Tribal government and tribal services have often been established in the 1980s and 1990s (with casino revenues) but their incorporation as municipalities is still a pending work. Talking about such highly controversial political issues might be regarded as offensive, but I think there is a need to discuss these topics. |

| Drawing Parks & Updating TIGER data in US | Is it appropriate to update the tags on these to a more fitting tag (such as tertiary or tracks where appropriate)? Yes, of course! You should do that!
Functional road classification is a good indicator whether a road deserves a higher classification or not:
Alleys and driveways to single homes are classified as highway=service. Don't forget to add access=private if trespassing is prohibited ;-) |
|
| landuse | In Potlatch, you just need to touch the road and then press P. Thus you can create two parallel ways with a user defined distance of e.g. 1 metre or 4 metres (estimated reality). If you zoom in enough, you can easily distinguish and edit all three ways. |
|
| Local Bus routes for Huntsville, Alabama | Please create a new relation for a new bus route as you have hijacked a bus route from another guy ;-) I have created a new relation just for you: Please use this link above if you want to continue with this bus line #10. It may take one or two minutes to zoom in, but it gives you a perfect overview about the current bus route #10. |

| Ranting about rendering |
... a clever algorithm tries to only render those tiles that are necessary ... That's what I wanted to say |
|
| Ranting about rendering | The mapnik renderer has a secret priority list. If you made many edits within a special area, it will take some hours to update the map. If you just made one or two small edits, it may take weeks until the map gets updated. The Osmarenderer also has a priority list. If there are many edits, Osmarender will update automatically. If you just made one or two small edits, you have to start the rendering process manually. Look at http://www.informationfreeway.org
It is also possible to update the Mapnik renderer manually by adding "/dirty" to the image's URL. |

| Blindly copying from GPS traces | All streets in the United States are copied from a government database (TIGER). It is still a lot of hard work to clean up TIGER data, because the TIGER classification doesn't fit to the OSM classification. State routes usually have a higher classification (secondary or tertiary, depending whether it has a two/three-digit or four-digit number) and a road number (=ref). There are a lot of driveways to single homes which should be downgraded to service roads. There are a lot of 4WD trails which should be downgraded to tracks. There are a lot of "no trespassing" signs which should be mentioned in the map (access=no or access=private). Furthermore, we would like to include pavement (surface) and speed limits (maxspeed) for each street in the United States. The TIGER database (with all its errors) is just a starting point in order to get the US covered as soon as possible. It has many useful features (e.g. ZIP postcode and spelled street names), but also many lacking features that need to be added by active mappers. |

| Mentor | You are living in Northern India, so it is a good idea to look at the India tagging guidelines in the Wiki: |
|
