| Newbie on a Road Trip! | Welcome to our project! Within the United States, almost all streets are already imported from government sources (TIGER). There is a very little chance to get newly built roads if they are constructed during the last two years. Currently, we are rather interested in getting road conditions than in getting tracks from U.S. highways. Are there access restrictions, speed limits or traffic lights? Furthermore, many banks, gas stations, hotels, parking areas, restaurants and supermarkets are still missing. Uploading these amenities would help us very much. Of course you may continue collecting tracks for personal purposes - Kosmos offers the possibility to create maps with GPX tracks. If these tracks have a long distance between two points (e.g. 100 metres), it is impossible to draw a nice roundabout or a parking aisle with them. If these tracks have a short distance between two points (e.g. 1 metre), it may be impossible to log such a long trip with one device. If you really want to use your GPS logger in virgin territory, try rural Mexico (only with appropriate caution). Hiking in National Parks also offers the chance to get some nice tracks because footpaths are not covered by TIGER so far. Currently we are working on closing gaps at county borders. Finding and fixing these gaps is rather a technical problem for advanced users. Adding shops is a great task for beginners because you can see these shops (banks, gas stations, hotels, restaurants) some hours later. FK270673 |

| Why so many new signups from Fremont, CA? | There are many good examples in your neighborhood. Well-mapped cities are attractive for new mappers because they want to see good examples. |

| New | Welcome to our project! You may get a good GPS device (iBlue) for just 3 GBP if there are no other bidders at ebay: This GPS logger has no detailed manual unlike the more expensive ones, so you have to learn it by doing (which usually takes roughly one or two hours until you get your first track even when sitting at home). Those who live in a developing country may apply for a GPS device at the OSM foundation:
Concerning my experience I can assure you that I have spent much more money for fares, food and fuel than for my GPS device. This area required roughly 10 days to get the tracks (mainly done by me) and it's still not complete:
I have paid 36 Euros for a GPS receiver which has been used on 18 day-long surveys so far. So the GPS receiver was far more cheaper than fares (8 Euros per day), food (7-10 Euros per day) or fuel (8-9 Cents per km, though mapping was mainly done riding a bicycle). Sorry for bothering you with these numbers, but I am fond of sharing background information. Yours, FK270673 |

| OpenStreetMap rendering in 279 languages | You have to be careful with interwiki because German Wikipedia sometimes ignores traditional German names (e.g. Allenstein). However, in many cases it may be a good idea, especially if there are no exonymes so far. I think we should avoid to add 279 datasets for each hamlet, so we should add exonymes automatically only if they are different from the local name. |
|
| OpenStreetMap rendering in 279 languages | Looks really great, but you can see how many German (and other) toponymes are still missing: Apenrade, Beuthen etc. Some German exonymes are medieval, e.g. Raben (Ravenna). In some cases, it would be nice to use an English (or Latin character) exonyme if there is no German exonyme available, e.g. in Bulgaria. Is ist possible to create a letter translator for non-latin characters? Camapa > Samara and Hamburg > Xambypr. We should continue discussing the enhancement of that multilingual map. |

| Global "noise" in map history makes it less useful | I agree that ignoring worldwide edits would be nice. FK270673 |

| SouthKorea | Maybe somebody has used the JOSM way optimizer which reduces the number of dots.
Did you ever try to use the JOSM way optimizer? |

| New user from Safford, Arizona, USA | Dear Richard, thank you very much for checking and changing these roads. ad 1)
The fact that one of three editors (JOSM, Mercaator, Potlatch) doesn't support a tag doesn't mean that this tag is invalid. Currently, there is a discussion about a new classification system for railroads which needs some international participation. osm.wiki/Proposed_features/detailed_Railway_Network ad 2) Of course not. First, there are some tourist trains on this line: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arizona_Eastern_Railway Second, some people are interested where to find disused stations, so it would be nice to mark them with disused=yes. It will take some time to show disused stations on the map as it took some time to show abandoned railroads on the map. Openstreetmap is a long-term project and it will take some time to find a system that fits all railroads properly. Best regards

| There is a software bug | Thanks, it works! |

| There is a software bug | My second comment was sent by email, but your comment hasn't been sent by email. Why? |
|
| There is a software bug | What happens if you change your edit some hours later as I did with my edit? |

| Unexisting Roads in Peru | 1. If these roads are narrower than mapped, downgrade them, e.g. track -> path

| xybot - just stop it | At least xybot exists since October 2008:
|
|
| xybot - just stop it | At least, xybot makes a very good job correcting German spelling mistakes. Furthermore, it standardizes religious denominations, e.g. catolic > catholic. Of course it cannot handle tags where mappers don't know the difference between baptist and lutheran (or the difference between protestant and prostitute). Concerning organisational affiliation, I would suggest to add one or two additional tags (e.g. church membership, diocese, language or liturgy) instead of reverting all xybot spelling corrections. | Today I'm interested in marking a hospital and lots of it's related buildings (Tag:amenity=hospital) | It is also possible to tag an area as hospital, as I did just a minute ago. Best regards,
