Midterm Update: Temporary Road Closures Database and API - GSOC 2025

Hi Archit, not sure if you already have external information sources in scope? Here in Rostock we have a opendata channel also with georeference: https://www.opendata-hro.de/dataset/baustellen Needs to be handeled as limitations for pedestrians / cyclists are somewhat poorly present. Also its just what is planned, not nessesarly whats currently on the ground ;-)

Long time ago I had contact with https://www.ndr.de/verkehr but they also stated that its difficult to aggregate all the sources on the different ferderal levels. In theorie there is TMC and per state a single information exchange … AFAIK no institution has a automatic worklflow to push limitations.

Some stats and facts on drone imagery in OpenAerialMap

Kam still superimpressed what is all possible with drones. ESP with budget and DIY there are so cool projects out there to archive gold aerial imagery and generate brillant GIS data out of it :-) https://github.com/Matthias84/awesome-flying-fpv/

Land Use Is Useful, Not Cosmetic - A Tale From an End User

Hi, thanks for the article and of course great respect for volunteering as firefighter! As you wrote, I always try to imagine what might be possible with rich detaiped objects. But yes I also can somewhat und erstand critics on micromapping. I guess time will show which lervrl of Detail and is useful on global (Or different local?) coverage :-)

Improving interaction between OSM and academic communities

Hi, I maintained / collected the research wiki page long time ago. I had the same impression, that both communities could benefit from each other and that it makes sense to centralize an exchange.

What I learned is: there is an permanent lack of time to do things right:

  • researcher are looking forward to release their paper and don’t share the infos / ideas before or lack of time to publish the raw data / prototypes / … after the presentation. No time to maintain esp. to maintain sourcecode
  • mappers want to contribute geodata but not maintain / cleanup wikipages, contact researchers or follow the scientific magazines. They don’t follow all the channels or like to contribute to one survey per week

It isn’t bad at all, but IMHO both perspective should be accepted and keep in mind :-)
