aeroway:paragliding
Hi! I have reverted your addition of aeroway:paragliding on Key:aeroway because this key is not in use. Key and Tag pages are intended to document tags that are used. And there are different tags in use, see https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/search?q=aeroway%3Dparagliding and https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/free_flying%3Aparagliding . You could propose this key and/or make a proposal. Or you can use it anyway because you can use any tags you like. However, it would be important to be able to distinguish documented uses from undocumented unused ones, so that users can easily recognize whether they are following a common practice when using a tag or are using a special case that may cause discussion or be reverted when mapping/tagging. Due to previous additions to the page, it is already very difficult to keep track of what is in widespread and undisputed use and what has been invented by individuals. --Chris2map (talk) 07:57, 2 August 2025 (UTC)
- How about "You can use any tags you like, but please document them here on the OpenStreetMap wiki, even if self-explanatory. Documenting allows others to find your features" ? https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/tags/aeroway%3Aparagliding=airstrip. What's the "undisputed use" for paragliding ramps ? - There's often unclear, unambiguous, and contradictory information here in the Wiki. If you use the key, you can document it. However, including it in the main list on the prefix-key page (especially without any content (empty taglist due to non-existing key page)) isn't documentation in my opinion. And, as I said, I think it's important to keep the commonly used and newly created ones distinguishable. The term "paragliding" is certainly not controversial. However, there can be different opinions about when, what, and how it is used (e.g. the values used). If the key is documented on a separate page, it can be easily explained and discussed. Whether this separate page is then a normal key page is also a matter of differing opinions and may also depend on the nature of the tag. Possibilities include subpages in the own User:.../ namespace, or the Proposal: namespace, or directly a Key:/Tag: page that clearly states that it is suggested / new tagging. In this case, I think starting a key page is fine (if it is actually used) since it's about a common feature. --Chris2map (talk) 10:11, 2 August 2025 (UTC)
