pole=traffic_sign

Hi! You did add a data item for the tag pole=traffic_signpole=traffic_sign (Q23132). But that tag is not in the OSM database and not used. Primarily, with the data items and Key: and Tag: pages we document tags that are in use (on the map and in OSM database), or that were used widely but have been deprecated. Tags that aren't in use are proposed ones and shouldn't be documented like tags in use. Therefore the tag should be proposed and/or discussed on a wiki page or the forum, and be used, before creating a data item, IMHO. --Chris2map (talk) 15:20, 27 August 2025 (UTC)

Hi @Chris2map. I am in the process of adding detailed information about bus stop pole in my city. I have added documented tags like "pole=yes", "flag=yes", and undocumented tag "totem=yes" which I want to propose the scheme later. However, someone suggested me to stop doing that [here] and suggested me to propose a new tag first. That is why I edited some wiki pages lately.
I decided to expand Key:pole and created Template:Generic:Map Features:pole to list the difference between each type. However, I encountered "Data item not found. Check your spelling" error which I thought could be solved by creating items. I was wrong and now I am confused. Do you have any suggestion? Thanks NFarras (talk) 15:40, 27 August 2025 (UTC)
I see. Great that you try very to improve tagging and react to concerns. The explanation with the OSM changeset sounds like a bigger undertake / attempt for the whole city. I think it would be good to discuss it with other mappers who are active there. As I wrote, a data item is more like the last thing to do, IMHO. You could discuss it at the OSM forum, or make a proposal. If you create Wiki pages for new proposed tags, it should be clearly stated and recognizable, that it is proposed tagging and not established one. Otherwise, there is a high probability that others will challenge the content, revert it, etc. --Chris2map (talk) 15:59, 27 August 2025 (UTC)
@Chris2map I think it is safe to say that I am the only active mapper in this topic in Bandung right now :). I recently met some local mappers during an offline event and they seemed to be okay with this. I may need to discuss specific detail about this proposal though. For now, here is my plan:
  1. Stop doing mass bus stop edit
  2. Postpone wiki changes
  3. Create and publish a detailed proposal
  4. Share it to forums
Am I right? NFarras (talk) 16:29, 27 August 2025 (UTC)
Totally! I don't really know the situation, so I don't want to presume to know exactly what's right and wrong. But the plan sounds pretty good. --Chris2map (talk) 19:51, 27 August 2025 (UTC)
