Tagging this Korean gate
Hi @Daishu10000: I just saw that your proposal Proposal:Man made=ceremonial gate has been approved, congratulations !
So I would like to ask for your help in tagging this gate (https://www.openstreetmap.org/way/265622642#map=19/39.075641/125.823069):
Which tag do you think I should use ?
Thanks and have a good day — Koreller (talk) 14:27, 10 September 2025 (UTC)
- This structure can be seen as having the characteristics of a monument, the significance of a ceremonial purpose, and the function of a gate.
- (Therefore, at this point, whether a mapper tags it as a 'monument' or a 'gateway' is not a major issue. However, personally, I am most inclined to support 'man_made=ceremonial_gate'.)
- Accordingly, more in-depth research and follow-up discussion are needed regarding the criteria that distinguish a general 'monument' from a 'ceremonial gate'.
- Among the various criteria that separate the two as monumental structures, a relatively clear one is whether it divides an area.
- In other words, what we commonly call an 'arch of triumph' serves as a gate, but it does not really divide a space based on the structure itself.
- In the case of this structure, while it also functions as a gate, it has significant meaning in terms of dividing an area, so it is closer to a 'ceremonial gate'.
- That said, I think it is possible to use 'man_made=ceremonial_gate' without specifying a more detailed 'ceremonial_gate=*' tag.
- (Additionally, in this case, since the structure has no door-leaf, it is somewhat questionable to call it a gate.)
- Many structures classified as 'man_made=ceremonial_gate' lack specific attribute tags, and if necessary, I believe this structure should be studied and classified alongside them. --깨몽/dreamy (talk) 04:37, 11 September 2025 (UTC)
I have edited it, see https://www.openstreetmap.org/changeset/171772111#map=18/39.075579/125.823667. I tagged this as man_made=ceremonial_gate because it can't obstruct passage.(You can see the structrue is not directly connected to the nearby forest, so pedestrians can walk around it.) And for the specific attribute tags, I think it is not hongsalmun or iljumun, so the value need to futher discussion. ——Daishu10000 08:59, 11 September 2025 (UTC)
By the way, I think the most important thing to distinguish man_made=ceremonial_gate from man_made=gate and man_made=gatehouse is whether the structrue can be used as a "gate" and control if pedestrians can enter. Specifically, if a structure can be bypassed easily by padestrains and mainly from ceremonial function, I think it should be man_made=ceremonial_gate.——Daishu10000 9:11, 11 September 2025 (UTC)
- Thanks @Dreamy: and @Daishu10000: I agree
man_made=ceremonial_gateseem very good to me, but yes, my question was more about whichceremonial_gate=*value to use — Koreller (talk) 09:34, 11 September 2025 (UTC)
