It works by scanning for waterways that connect nodes with exactly two endpoints and exactly two starting points. The method is not free from false positives or false negatives, but it highlights “low-hanging fruit” cases where directions may be incorrect. Such issues can occur, for example, when a river is reversed in OSM but smaller segments—like tunnels—are left unchanged.
