Introduction

Explanation

This is an observational study of airports in 5 countries based on official airport charts and statistical data.

• Brazil, France, Malaysia, USA and South Africa were chosen due to their large size, variety of operations and publically available data.

• Airport physical data is the most current from the AIPs, while statistical data is from official sources for the year 2024, except for Brazil which is from 2018. Numbers for 2024 and 2018 should be within 10% of each other.

• Only airports present both in the statistical datasets and AIPs are included.

• Due to their size, the full lists of airports are saved in their own pages.

Column Names

Some column names do not obviously convey their meaning. Here are some explanations:

ARFF	ICAO Rescue and Fire Fighting category for that aerodrome. If it can be upgraded, the permanent and upgraded values are shown.
ATC Sts	Number of controlled ATC stations, that is, the number of instances of GND, TWR, APP, APN, DLV or ATIS stations. If there are none, AFIS replaces the number if there is an advisory frequency and None if there is not.
INS Stands	Number of stands with published INS coordinates. Secondary -A, -B etc. stands are not counted.
Best APPs	Best approach type for each side of the best runway. In order, the possible values are: Visual, NDB, VOR, RNP, ILS
Wiki Dests	Number of unique destinations on the aerodrome's Wikipedia page, using a version closer to the end of the statistical data. Although probably innacurate, magnitude differences should still be useful.
