The following page is a template of how to map railway projects in my interpretation. Additional input is more than welcome

This OpenHistoricalMap project aims for the historical coverage of railways in insert region here

Tagging

This section describes the standardization desired for this project. Listed below is a minimal set of tags. Additional tags can be added, as appropriate, but mappers should feel comfortable moving on if these have been included as a first pass.

Ways

tag notes example
name=* name, if it has one only special names like "Kaiserbahn". not Town A - Town B railway
railway=construction for the time during which a railway is either under construction or complete, but not yet open. if the railway is completed include it in a multilinestring
railway=abandoned for the time when railway traffic is withdrawn with no intention of resuming it include it in a multilinestring
similar with railway=disused and railway=razed
railway=rail this should be true for most railways
railway=narrow_gauge this should be used (for now) for smaller gauge railway than the standard ones in the region
gauge=* this should be true for most railways a change of gauge should be made with multilinestrings
usage=* this should be used to outline the usage of the specific time period a change of usage should be made with multilinestrings
source=* the URL where you obtained the geometry Bing Maps
start_date=* start date in ISO 8601 YYYY-MM-DD format 1999-12-31
1999-12
1999
start_date:edtf=* used when the start date is uncertain; can also be used for times 1999-12-31T13:44
1962-12-XX
/1999
1980/1992
start_date:source=* the URL where you obtained the start date
OPTIONAL Way Tags
tag notes example
ref=* this is not used by any automated processing, rendering, or search.

route membership should be reflected in relation membership, not ref=* tagging

Relations

When should segments be added to a railway route relation?

  • As soon as it connects at least two stations
  • As long as railway traffic occurs on the railway
  • If the segment is not a siding, crossover etc.

When should relations be created?

  • A route relation for each time period. For example, Town A - Town B railway.
  • All route relations should be grouped into a chronology relation
  • If a segment changes gauge, usage or its operating state a multilinestring relation should be created
tag notes example
type=route -
route=tracks -
ref=* put the official track number of the railway
wikidata=* use the data item Q-code for the article about the railway Q00000
wikipedia=* en:<article name with spaces> replace en with country specific prefix. This note should be deleted in an official page
start_date=* Put the start date of the route in its valid form at this time
end_date=* Put the end date of the route in its valid form at this time
members Please sort your relation members so they represent a continuous line.

Railway list

Use this table to document the buildout of the Railway System
