About Me
Hello! I'm David. My day job is as a Product Manager in the tech industry, but I have a real passion for open data.
My mapping journey started for a simple reason: delivery couriers couldn't find my house in my Tbilisi neighborhood, Orkhevi. What began as a practical fix soon grew into a bigger project. I started documenting my area not just on OSM, but also on Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons.
My background in data analysis and cybersecurity shapes how I map. I believe good map data should be accurate, detailed, and connected to other sources so people can verify it. I'm also a big believer in using AI responsibly to help Open Data projects, as long as it supports the work of human contributors, not replaces it.
I'm a proud member of the OpenStreetMap Georgia community and always happy to work with others to improve the map. I speak fluent English and Russian, and have elementary knowledge of Georgian and French.
A Hyper-Local Documentation Project: The Orkhevi Example
I noticed my neighborhood and the areas around it were basically invisible online, so I decided to build their digital presence from the ground up.
- Wikipedia Articles: I wrote the first-ever articles on both the English and Russian Wikipedias for Orkhevi, Tetrikhevi, and the Tetrikhevi HPP. The Russian article on Orkhevi is currently a candidate for Featured Article status.
- Linked Open Data: I created Wikidata items for each place to act as a central hub. In OSM, I link objects back using the `
wikidata=*` and `wikipedia=*` tags. - On-the-Ground Mapping: I went out and took photos of almost every Point of Interest (POI) and added them to OSM using the `
image=*` tag. This gives real, verifiable context to the map data. I did the same for Yandex Maps.
Through this effort, I effectively built the informational landscape for this part of Tbilisi from scratch, making it discoverable for everyone.
My Mapping Activities in Georgia
My main mapping focus is on Tbilisi and the areas around it, especially residential and developing districts.
My contributions include:
- Core Map Features: Adding and fixing `
highway=*` features, `building=*` outlines, `address=*` details, and `barrier=*` types to improve routing and navigation. - Trail Mapping: When I go hiking, I always try to record a GPX track. I've uploaded over 60 traces to help make hiking and recreational trails more accurate and safe.
- Detailed POIs: I don't just add points on the map; I enrich them with detailed tags and photos to make them more useful for machines and humans alike.
- Street-Level Imagery: I'm an active Mapillary contributor. I've uploaded over 103,500 images, covering more than 470 km, to help everyone with armchair mapping.
- Data Quality: I regularly fix issues found by Osmose, the OSM Inspector once I find them, but I'm not looking for purposefully for them - guys at OSM Georgia are way better at it.
As of early 2025, I have made over 43,000 map changes and was ranked among the top 15 most active contributors in Georgia. Right now I'm more into writing Wikipedia Articles to support my mapping efforts with some qualitative information.
Tools I Use
I use a variety of tools depending on the task at hand:
- JOSM for complex edits and bulk tasks.
- Rapid and iD for quick, browser-based edits.
- Mobile Editors like StreetComplete, Vespucci, Every Door, and OsmAnd for on-the-go surveys and updates.
