United States roads tagging/Routes

From OpenStreetMap Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

This picture dictionary shows how to tag the most common routes in the United States, based on signage you see while field surveying or on Mapillary or OpenStreetCam. See Road signs in the United States for more discussion about these shields, Custom Highway Shields for information on implementing a renderer that displays shields based on these tags, and United States roads tagging for road tagging in general.

The way ref=* values below are also used in way destination:ref=*. In most states, guide signs omit the black background seen below.

Values of network=* for highways belonging to counties, cities and other sub-state administrative divisions should follow the local highway tagging guidelines. Spaces should be replaced with underscores, and place names should generally be unabbreviated.

  1. 1.0 1.1 The value of network=* should be US:WV:County verbatim, not replaced with the name of the county (such as US:WV:Kanawha, an example of common practice prior to 2022). "County roads" in West Virginia are actually a state-maintained, state-signed system of secondary roads. Shields are identical in all counties.
