Tag value useful or replaceable

@Something B: There are a lot of similar tag values ("bare_rock") as much as different keys (landcover=*, surface=*) so that "natural=bare_ground" can be tagged with an alternative and isn't needed, IMHO. Anyway, isn't this a "possible synonym" of landcover=bare_ground, is it? --Chris2map (talk) 16:32, 15 December 2025 (UTC)

"Anyway, isn't this a "possible synonym" of landcover=bare_ground, is it?"
Yes, but separate key for "landcover" isn't widely accepted, so maybe natural=bare_ground makes sense. Something B (talk) 17:03, 15 December 2025 (UTC)
Maybe. IMHO, this isn't needed and didn't achieve support. It seems that most of the uses are in Somalia in 2020 from UNGSC mappers. The places could be tagged with natural=bare_rock, natural=sand, natural=scree, natural=blockfield, natural=desert. The image File:Bare_Ground_-_geograph.org.uk_-_186033.jpg shows a place "where the forestry plantation has been felled and the ground reworked in preparation for the windfarm", so more like a construction site, and I would tag it with a man_made or landcover tag (at least. rather landcover=bare_ground than natural=*. – I wouldn't have created the page (as a normal tag-in-use page). But it's not impossible or forbidden either. I was still curious to ask. --Chris2map (talk) 18:20, 18 December 2025 (UTC)
