Why not historic=* or tourism=*

man_made=* is usually for common everyday features, e.g. general infrastructure, bridges, pipes, etc. This ceremonial gates look like close to historic=wayside_shrine in function. In Hungary and Romania we have somewhat similar Szekely gates, and we tag them as tourism=artwork artwork_type=szekely_gate: https://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/tags/artwork_type=szekely_gate .

Did you have some consultation about this tag on the forum, or on one of the mailing lists? Or what is the rationale of using man_made=* instead of historic=* or tourism=*? IMHO any of those main tags would fit better. --Infeeeee (talk) 12:49, 2 September 2025 (UTC)

Why don't you look for it first. You missed it. It's "approved" for a reason. Proposal:man_made=ceremonial_gate
historic=wayside_shrine is flawed "This tag is also used to mark shrines created in modern times (not just "historic" ones)" Tag:historic=wayside_shrine
There's man_made=cross already, generalizing historic=wayside_cross
These are not quite tourism=artwork artistic level. They are mostly similar, not unique and individually imagined. You are simply using it provisionally. It should be considered for change to ceremonial_gate=szekely in reverse.

The proposal is not linked on the wiki page, I read it through. I didn't expected I have to search for it. Can you add the link to the page--Infeeeee (talk) 08:35, 3 September 2025 (UTC)
It's in the box on the right, "Status: approved"
